Terry's Story

Life I attended NMSU, (1965-1968)pursuing a Degree in Mechanical Engineering. My sophomore year, I met Judy Davidson from Hobbs (Yes, HOBBS). December 23 1967, she became my Bride. She is still putting up with me after all this time. I Stopped my education in 1968, joined the Army Reserves in Las Cruces, then moved back to Roswell and transferred to the New Mexico Army National Guard. Judy worked for a pre-school and I worked at Johnston Pump Co. I went to Basic Training (Ft. Bliss, El Paso, TX) in 1968. My Advanced Individual Training was as a Wheeled Vehicle Mechanic (MOS63B20) at Ft. Juachuca, AZ. Back in Roswell I trained OJT as a Tracked Vehicle Mechanic (MOS63C20). My Military Service ended with a Medical Discharge, due to a bad Motorcycle/Auto wreck. Our Daughter Kari, was born February 17, 1975, and our son, Daniel was born August 30, 1979. They are pursuing their own lives and we are very proud of them both. Judy received her Bachelor of Science in Education at NMSU in 1972. It took me a bit longer, but I graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering in 1977. I worked at White Sands Missile Range from 1977 to 2002 (25 years) and retired as a Senior Design Engineer in Research and Development. Our first child was the impetus for Judy to become a permanent Domestic Engineer, taking care of our children full time until they left home. Our son, Daniel still lives in Las Cruces, has a band, and works as assistant manager at Hollywood Video. We visit very frequently. Our daughter, Kari married a commercial pilot (Tommy Delgado), and they make such a wonderful couple. Kari and her Husband Tommy became proud parents of our first Grandson, Brandon Thomas Delgado on the Fourth of July, 2004. We are VERY proud Grandparents. My Bride, Judy is still the apple of my eye. Besides our most important role as Grandparents we enjoy reading, travel, and just being together. God is a central point in our Family lives, and we give all the Glory to Him. It would be terrific to hear from anyone who has known either of us. Please feel free to contact us. Judy and Terry W. Newsom (Edited 7-21-04) Colle...Expand for more
ge I knew I wanted to be an Engineer by junior high. I chose Mechanical Engineering because I was raised on a farm, and something always needed fixing, or modification. My Military Training was Wheeled Vehicle Mechanic (63B20), and through OJT, Tracked Vehicle Mechanic (63C20). I had worked as a mechanic in a gas station, and built several engines by the time I completed my Sophomore year at NMSU. I worked three+ years with Lockheed as a Draftsman at White Sands Missile Range before I returned to college in '72. Near College Graduation, I interviewed like there was no tomorrow, which paid off with five job offers after college. I owned property in Las Cruces, so I took the offer from WSMR in the Optics Branch of the Data Collection Division. I had incredibly challenging opportunities to use my education and work studies to continue improvement of my work skills, and by '87 had become a GM-13, managing 53 positions (3 Engineers, a Secretary, 2 Unit Chiefs for Telescopes and Cinetheodolites with the remainder being Electronic Engineering Technicians). The work led me to a great deal of Management Training and considerable travel for the Government working with many Contracters on various types of Contracts and Procurements. My work schedule was Variable Tour (an 8 hour window anywhere within the 24 hour timeframe). This was sometimes very taxing, but exposed me to many types of tests with some very strange equipment, which was very fulfulling professionally. During massive downsizing (oxymoron?) I was converted to an Electronics Engineer (Personnel checked my training records, and noted I had a great deal of Electronics training) in the Instrumentation Development Directorate. This turned out to be an opportunity for me to become an Engineering Consultant, representing the Ballistic Missile Defense Organization (Pentagon), on Contracts that were having problems completing Project Efforts within budget, technical, and timely system delivery parameters on some very innovative technology. I enjoyed these challanges immensley. I retired from WSMR February 21, 2001 with 25 years of service. My Wife and I will probably remain in Las Cruces.
