Theresa's Story

I have Metastatic Breast Cancer (stage IV) and there is no cure for this disease. I was first diagnosed in April 2007 with stage 3A breast cancer. After a mastectomy, 9 months of chemotherapy, and radiation therapy, I was pronounced cancer-free May 5, 2008. I remained so until September 12, 2012. I was told that my cancer had metastasized in my left iliac wing. Once again I was going through radiation therapy. My doctor did not believe I needed chemo at this time. So I did 30 rounds of radiation and waited. In March 2014, I was told the cancer had spread. It went from the one area on my pelvis to several spots along my pelvic bone, left femur, lower spine, and 2 nickel size spots on the liver. Chemotherapy began for the second time in my life. I underwent chemo every 3 weeks for 7 months. It made me very sick. I was in the ER within 2 to 3 days after every chemo treatment and being admitted into the hospital for several days afterwards because of infections. It also affected the ejection fraction of my heart. My heart still has not fully recovered and only pumps at 45%. Finally, my doctor took me off the chemo that was making me sick and weakening my heart. We began a different treatment that was monthly injections. Those injections did not work at all. In fact, my cancer spread further and worsened. I have more lesions on my bones, the spots on my liver have become bigger, and now i have a titanium rod put in my left femur because the cancer has cr...Expand for more
eated several holes in it and this will keep it from breaking. My doctor is trying to give me as much time as possible for me to be with my family and friends. She has put me on a new weekly chemo medication that does not make sick at all and I am able to function. In a few weeks I should be having more scans done to see how well the treatment is working and how much more life on Earth I will have gained. With whatever time I have remaining on this Earth, my goals are to visit my family and friends back in California that I have not seen in a very long time and to pay off my car so my son has some kind of inheritance. I would also like to meet my biological family, the Martins, which have only found me a few months ago in Baltimore. These 3 things above all are all I really want to do before I depart this Earth. Sure doing fun things like going to Rome or Paris would be fun, but I would rather see my family and friends, and know that my son has my car to drive when I'm gone. Making the car payment using my tiny SSI withdrawal every month is difficult. I have become my son's dependent because of it and I would really like to lift this burden off his shoulders. Taking care of me and making sure my debts are paid are more than a 20 year old should have to carry on his young shoulders. Any contribution puts me closer to this dream.
