Thomas's Story
Military
I began my 24 years of naval service joining the Navy with Classmate Kip Martin in September 1967. After boot camp in San Diego I was sent to NAS Jacksonville, Fla for Aviation Electrician training. After training I was sent to my first command VFP-63 at NAS Miramar, Ca. I participated in 2 cruises; one to VietNam aboard the aircraft carrier USS Coral Sea CVA-43 and a Southern Europe cruise aboard the aircraft carrier USS FD Roosevelt CVA 42. My next assignment was to the "Desert Navy" at DMAFB, Tucson, Az. We took care of old aircraft, removed salvagable parts from some to use in flyable aircraft and prepared some for return to flight either for foreign countries or other government use. Next assignment was VS29 at NAS North Island, Ca. Mt first new aircraft; the S3A Viking ASW aircraft. Made a Southeast Asian cruise with them aboard the USS Enterprise CVAN 65. next assignment was to teach new AEs to work on the S3A aircraft. The next assignment was with VA95 in NAS Whidbey Island, WA. I made 3 cruises with this Attack squadron. 1 abo...Expand for more
ard the USS America CVA66, 2 aboard the USS Carl Vinson CVN70 - all to watch over the desert folks in the Persian Gulf. The next assignment was back to teaching - this time I taught new AEs to work on the new helicopter SH60 SeaHawk in NAS North Island, Ca. The next and last assignment was to VAW114 Hormel Hawgs at NAS Miramar, Ca. Yep, I made a full circle in 24 years of service beginning and ending my career at NAS Miramar.
I made tree cruises with VAW114 - all aboard the USS Carl Vinson CVN 70. I finally disembarked for the final time in September 1990, day for day 24 years after I began.
Today I maintain my ties to the military as a member of the Fleet Reserve Association Branch 9, the NonCommissioned Officer Association as a life memeber and mosy recently by volunteering with the San Diego Aircraft Carrier Museum aboard the USS Midway CVA 41 permanently docked at Navy Pier in San Diego Bay. All of my former commands have stood down in the intervening years - the latest and last to be disestablished was VS29 Dragonfires. And so life moves on....
