Thomas (Tom)'s Story
Life
After Graduation in 1978, I joined the US Air Force, and stayed in for a little over 14 years.
I've traveled a big part of the world while in the military. I've been stationed in and/or traveled to many places around the world. I think the count is now at about 6 or 7 times around the world now since I left High School.
I served during Desert Sheild/Storm while in the Air Force. I was a "Crew Chief" on the smaller fighter aircraft while I was in the military back then.
I've been married and divorced twice, and I have two daughters from the first marrage.
I now live back in the LA area with a house still in Tucson, Arizona as well. I have worked at UNITED AIRLINES both in the San Francisco Bay area, and in Los Angeles, California.
I work at LAX on the ramp as a Gate Mechanic for UNITED AIRLINES. I was furlowed from United in 2001 and after working in the Middle East and in Tucson for work, I have now recently returned back to UAL in Los Angeles. I am staying in the South Bay of LA for now but still owning a house in Tucson and until I rent it out, I am a bi-state kinda guy at the moment. That's easy for me since flying back to Arizona is only a matter of showing up and getting on the plane! The best thing about working for an airline, I think!
School
I just remember school as a place that I had to go because it was the law or something. In hind site, I should have applied myself better to set myself up for real life. There were a few teachers there who saw my potential, but I chose to not do anything about it and I now regret that. If I had it all to over again, I would go and really knuckle down to what I should have done in the first place. Maybe I would be flying jets now instead of fixing them.
I had a few crushes like any one did, but I chose then and now to keep them to myself to avoid the embarrassing situations that would come up. I was never very good in that department at all. Sometimes I wonder though, what I would have done different and how t...Expand for more
hose things might have gone if I could have just gotten over my fears.
My most craziest situations would have to be cutting classes and getting caught smoking from time to time. Dumb stuff really.
College
I went to college while I was in the Air Force with a class here and a class there. I've got enough credits for an associates degree just not in the right areas. I'll fix that when I get more time and I'm not working nights with a floating shift.
Workplace
I started out enlisting in the Air Force and remaining there for almost 15 years right after High School. I took up some second jobs while in the military mostly working in clubs behind the bar. I was once known as "the blue eyed bar man" because the girls called me that all of the time and it stuck.
Since leaving the military I have gotten all of my licenses to maintain aircraft from the US government. I've have since had to take work as a bag boy in a supermarket, a security guard, a millwright in a paper mill, a military equipment mechanic, a mechanic in a tire shop, and of course various jobs as either a contactor or a direct employee working on different aircraft over the years. My best job over the years though is working for United Airlines, where I am the happiest.
I have also attempted to be an insurance salesman, a door to door salesman and I worked as an extra on a few things filmed in Hollywood as well, none of which were very rewarding at all for me.
Military
I have been to many places around the world while in the Air Force working on jets. While in the military I worked mostly various models of the F-4 and the F-111 aircraft. I also served during operations "El Dorado Canyon" (Libya bombing) in 1986 and "Desert Shield/Storm/Calm" as well in the Middle East in 1990-1991.
I am a graduate from the NCO academy in RAF Upwood in the UK as well in 1992.
I took some off duty jobs working the clubs at Sheppard AFB and at RAF Upper Heyford as well. You may have seem me behind the bars at some point.
