Thomas's Story

I am retired from the Federal Government for over 16 years now. My career was awesome and I got to do some very interesting work for several agencies. The career allowed me to see every state in the good ole US of A. Most of my career was in managerial positions. As a party animal throughout school and afterwards the upstart of my career was rocky. After my mother died in 1978 I went into a rehab for addictions and stayed sober for over 18 years. I met my life mate at an AA meeting. He was from Boston, Ma. and he was a former Xaverian Brother. He left his religious order and went back to school for his Doctorate. Brian's career resulted in us moving all over the country where he managed Psychiatric Units. He became a Hospital Director when we lived in Indianapolis, IN. I managed the Payroll Dept. for the Audie L. Murphy VA in San Antonio, TX., I was a personnel specialist and an Employee Development Specialist and eventually managed the Midwest Collection operation for the IRS. When we moved back to Texas from Indy I got a job with the US Environmental Protection Agency where I was an External Affairs Specialist. I interacted with all the governors from Arkansas, Texas, New Mexico, Louisiana, and Oklahoma. I met and became friends with Ann Richards and Bill Clinton. LOL can you imagine?? I gained a significant amount of "Hill Experience and Federal Grant experience in that job. My job was a high visible position. Was always on the TV, radio and in the newspapers. LOL I worked with all the Native Americans in New Mexico who needed help starting up their own Superfund Program. Crawled around all the pueblos, fished for turtles in Lousiana and went on possum hunts with the Cajuns. LOL Brian and I moved back to Boston and lived on the ocean. He managed a Psychiatric Hospital and I became the Administrative Officer for the Chief of all the VA Research. Spent lots of time in Washington, DC and traveled extensively to all the VA facilities all over the country. Got to know DC very well and gained more Hill Experience. art attack at age 47. The loss resulted in my return to the gay scene and didn't result in any lasting relationships. Met numerous friends and traveled extensively with them to various destinations abroad. Retired at age 50. Since retirement have traveled all over the Mediterranean. Especially love Greece and the Greek Islands. I have a real interest in Anthropology and Archaeology. Lots of great digs in Greece and Turkey. I plan on taking more Archaeology courses and maybe going on a dig. I live very close to Mexico and there are many interesting digs close by. I took a stab at trying to go back to Wilkes-Barre, Pa. but it's not for me. I opened a Polish Deli but it didn't work out. I developed coronary problems and moved back to Boston to get the proper medical attention that I needed. My lifestyle and interests don't fit in with the Valley. I often think about my old school days and miss everyone. I periodically went to the mother house of the Bernadine nuns in Reading and got to spend some adult quality time with several of the old nuns. Went to several of their funerals as well. Currently not involved with anyone and I love being alone for the first time in my life. Every day is a new adventure. I plan on writing grants for the city of Corpus Christi and working at home. I am now employed by Texas A&M and am pursuing a degree in international business. Currently pursuing a Master's Degree in Public Administration and will retire with another pension from the Texas Teachers Retirement System. I keep on ticking. Oh I have a Yorkie and a shh tzu along with two puppies. Upon completion of the Master's Degree I intend on pursuing my PhD in Education. Love working with the college students and being nice and warm during the brutal northeast weather. The Wyoming Valley is a horrifying place and I am very glad not to have to be there in that decaying city. It is very sad to see how poorly my hometown has become with all the crime, homeless and welfare cases along with all the section * housing. Great neighborhoods gone to ruins. Such a shame!

How about the 40 hour devotions?
Then there was the monthly First Friday Services. I used to always get into trouble with the nuns for acting up on the altar. I think it was the influence of the candles!
Remember getting our throats blessed so we wouldn't swallow a fish bone. ROFL
