Thomas's Story

Life Greetings from Chattanooga, TN where I have been raising a family and perusing a career in music since 1982. The best day of my life was September 6, 1980 when I married the beautiful and talented Deniece Gugler. Since that time we have had the great privilege to raise two fine sons: Carl Vaughn Schow who is now 20 and a sophomore at Rhodes College in Memphis, TN, and Robert Bouton Schow II who is 16 and being home schooled by Deniece. Carl carried on the musical tradition and is continuing to study trumpet while perusing a degree in English at Rhodes. Bobby has been a long time member of the Chattanooga Boys Choir and is an accomplished, improvisational pianist. Since 1986 I have been teaching music at the Baylor School in Chattanooga and am currently the Director of Instrumental Music conducting all the school bands and the high school orchestra. Additionally, I am heavily involved with the residential life community at the school and supervise one of the boy’s dormitories. It is a good and full life and has the added benefit of always having my family close by. The school campus is our home and its stunning beauty is a daily gift. After graduating from the Interlochen Arts Academy in 1973 I studied at Lawrence University from 1973-1975. In the spring of 1976 I transferred to the Peabody Conservatory of Johns Hopkins University where I had the good fortune to study with the grea...Expand for more
t artist Walter Hautzig. I graduated with a Bachelor of Music Degree in the spring of 1979. After teaching in the Toledo, Ohio area from 1979-1980 I married and returned to musical study at Bowling Green State University in Bowling Green, Ohio. There I studied with Jerome Rose. I finished my course work at BGSU in 1982 and graduated in 1984 after I finished my thesis. In addition to my musical interests, I also pursued a part-time career in the US Army Reserve. I retired in 2002 after attaining the rank of Lieutenant Colonel but not before serving three tours on active duty. The first was in 1989 in support of OPERATION DESERT STORM, the second in 1997 in support of OPERATION ENDURING FREEDOM, and the last in 2002 in support of OPERATION IRAQI FREEDOM. I am grateful for the opportunity to serve my country and am proud of my service, but am also glad to be retired. Deniece and I have pursued a performing career that as taken us throughout the southeast and beyond. We had the great opportunity to produce and CD in 1998. It is entitled “Romantic Variations for Flute and Piano” and is available at Americuscd.com. It gives a great sample of my wife’s great artistry and is wonderful, playful music. I invite you to look this up and listen to see what we have been up to. I would love to hear from any of you who would like to contact us and wish you health and happiness. Thomas Schow
