Thomas's Story
Military
I was in Company 444 "Cub's Company" at the Great Lakes Navel Training Center. We were inducted at a Cub's Game in Chicago (July 1968). I joined with a buddy (Mike Burns) that was the RPOC in another company. I was in charge of the Shower Cleaning crew and we never missed a perfect score. During hell week, I worked with the Master at Arms providing counts to the Cooks. I fondly remember the "Reverend" saying prayers after lights went out. I was selected to be the company honor man at graduation.
Funny story: One evening before we were to go to Personel with our list of career choices, the Comander Shoumake was teaching us how to fold our shirts to fit into a locker on a ship. ears of my life was more important that learning to fold a shirt. He blew up at me!!! He said "No young whippersnapper was going to tell me how to run my company." I will never forget that moment. As usual, it was hurry and wait the next day and I had plenty of time to make choices. The picture of the guy holding a balloon up looked interesting. I selected Aerographer's Mate as my first choice. I got my first choice.
I attended A school at Lakehurst, NJ to become an Aerographer's Mate. I spent 1.5 years on Guam in the Fleet Weather Central and 1.5 years at NAS Whidbey Island, Washington. I was released with honorable discharge July 25, 1972. I am proud to have served. I have become a Meteorologist with the National Weather Service and owe the start to my Navy career. I now have over 40 years of Government service and plan to retire in about a year..
