Tim's Story

I did my GE cert at Grossmont College, where I worked in the English Lab with Mary Donnelly, then transfered to SDSU, where I studied History with classmate Wendy's father, Bill Cheek. As in HS, I was a desultory student, but a life-long learner. I became an actor in 1986 at the old Marquis Public Theatre, where I met my life-partner, Betty Matthews. I performed in the 1989 Edinburgh Festival, produced the West Coast premiere of ALL IN THE TIMING in 1995 and served onstaff with several area theatres. I've acted in more than 40 plays, directed a dozen and written a ...Expand for more
dozen which were produced, including two commissions for Sledgehammer, our city's experimental theatre. I still appear onstage occassionally, most recently in Cygnet's annual IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE. I stepped back from the artificiality of much of theatre to spend more time with Betty, family and friends and in nature. In 2007, we both became qualified Trail Guides at Mission Trails. We're into Native American rock art. We're learning Spanish and looking to travel in the Spanish-speaking world. Since 2003, I've taught at the Embassy Center for English Studies.

My mother's effects included all manner of curiosities. It took Betty Matthews to decrypt this charming cypher typed on onionskin, which I did not recall seeing.

Betty snapped this picture of me regarding the flag erected atop a cloud-encased Cowles Mountain, the 923'01 date stamp marking it as 12 days after the attacks for which we still didn't have a name: 9/11.

I had turned 40,
Beautiful Betty Matthews, spending a July day boating on the bay, sometime in the early 1990s because she still has bangs and I still have hair in this photo, which both went by the wayside soon after.
