Timothy's Story
Life
I'm originally from Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and I attended the Linn-Mar schools there through 6th grade. My family moved to Beatrice, Nebraska, in 1984 for what seemed like a good job opportunity for my father. After that fizzled out, we returned to Iowa, and specifically to Waterloo, in 1987.
I'm still living in Waterloo, although my parents moved back to Cedar Rapids in 1997. After high school, I attended the University of Northern Iowa and graduated in 1994. These days I'm doing clerical work for the clinic at Covenant Medical Center. I'm also a very active volunteer at the Cedar Valley Arboretum and Botanical Gardens (under development near Hawkeye Community College). I guess that's appropriate, because I majored in botany at UNI. I also sing with the Waterloo/Cedar Falls Metropolitan Chorale, which performs two classical concerts a year and occasionally appears with the Waterloo/Cedar Falls Symphony.

d work-study in the university greenhouse complex for 2 summer terms. The grocery store went out of business the year after my college graduation. I then held a seasonal job for a few months in the garden department at Waterloo Wal-Mart. I hoped that this might lead to a full-time position, but that didn't happen. I signed up with Manpower Temporary Services and worked odd jobs at several places for a few months. That is how I landed my current job at Covenant Clinic. I had anticipated working there for a month or so, but it led to a long-term assignment, and eventually I was hired full-time. I also work as a volunteer at the Cedar Valley Arboretum and Botanic Gardens. I would love to turn that into a full-time job at some point, and I feel that may happen as the arboretum becomes more established. In addition, each spring I spend a week doing volunteer work for a local organization called Green Scene. We hold a large plant sale right before Mothers' Day, and the money we raise is used to fund tree-planting projects in the Waterloo area.
