Tira's Story

Love Married the man of my dreams after dating him for 7 years. This year (2010) marks the 20th anniversary of our first date. I don't know how he's managed to put up with me this long, but I'm grateful for having met him and wouldn't change a thing. Life Sam and I live in Kentucky just outside Cincinnati and love it. We have no two-legged children, but we have three of the canine variety we've rescued. I can't imagine life without multiple dogs. We recently lost our beloved black Lab to malignant melanoma, so there's some sadness around our house right now, but the three we have left remind us how much joy they give us during their too-brief lives. Travel Traveling domestically and internationally is one of our passions. Whether it's a road trip through the back roads of Indiana organized by Scenic Road Rallies, a trip to Mayan ruins, or a few days in the Big Apple, we're game. Train rides through Switzerland, Germany, Austria, France, and England? Sure! Hot-air balloons over Arizona? You betcha! A helicopter ride to the bottom of the Grand Canyon? What fun! Biking across the Golden Gate Bridge and around the peninsula through Sausalito and Tiburon 16 miles before taking a ferry back to San Francisco? An absolute joy that left me with a sore butt for a week. Sam driving on the "wrong" side of the road in Ireland? Disconcerting but exhilarating! (As an aside, Sam did a terrific job in Ireland and Scotland driving on the left side of the road. It was the unfamiliarity of being on the left side that was so disconcerting to me. But he never, ever, tried to drive on the right side of the road, and this was even with driving a manual transmission car where the floor shifter was in his left hand instead of his right. He's brilliant!) Work and Education I was a late bloomer. I attended LSUS right out of high school but dropped out after majoring in (sequentially) math, Engl...Expand for more
ish, journalism, Uno, and Spades. I had excellent grades in high school but sucked my first time around in college. Without a degree I bounced among clerical jobs until I found out I had a (very) minor talent with computer software. I moved into IT with the FDIC and ended up teaching Lotus 1-2-3, dBase III Plus, WordPerfect, Word, and Excel. That morphed into a job writing accounting/bookkeeping software for hotels managed by the company I worked for. The hotels could do their own accounts payable, petty cash, P&L statements, etc. and transmit the data electronically to my company. But being able to do something and actually enjoying it are two different things... It took marrying Sam to get me back on the educational path. Computers were not where I wanted to head (stupid me), and I now have a BA in journalism and an MBA in marketing. Returning to school late in life showed me I had what it took to make those good grades again and accomplish something. Plus I didn't major in Uno when I went back to school <grin>. I now work for the university where I received my BA and MBA, and I love the people I work with. Although I will never be the ace investigative reporter I once dreamed of being (I even had the hubris to exclaim "Journalism is my life!" to a 1980s boyfriend), I like what I do and am happy with my life. Officially I'm a writer/editor, but my internal nickname is the Grammar Queen. History My whole life history is pretty much here on Classmates.com. The schools I've attended, the places I've worked...they're all here on Classmates. I loved high school at Woodlawn and wished at the time that I could have stayed in high school forever. I had great teachers and good friends. But history is the past, and in the present I have a great life and good friends -- plus I've reconnected with some of those high school friends on Facebook to connect my past with my future.
