Tom's Story
Tom has accomplished surprisingly little in the last thirty five years, considering the vast opportunities accorded him. The sound of the surf has always been too alluring for him to resist, and oh yeah, those umbrella drinks. He's made a modest living selling T-shirts to tourists and giving bogus tours to out-of-towners who wouldn't know whether or not Vasco da Gama ever really set foot on that very spot. "The better the story, the better the tips", that's been Tom's mantra. Not that he's a chronic liar; the truth just isn't that interesting. Well, maybe he is a chronic liar.
His fixation on leisure was momentarily broken when he caught a brief glimpse of the most beautiful sight he had ever laid eyes upon. Had the surf not been so poor that day, he might have missed it. But fate had determined that he would see her at that moment. Her air of indifference towards him only made the attraction that much stronger. With a determination that surprised even him, he pursued her. Despite numerous rejections, he persevered. Her heart...Expand for more
was finally melted when he said to her "You make me want to be a better man" (that line was later sold to a screenwriter named Mark Andrus for the paltry sum of $350. But hey, it was enough for a new shortboard and a case of Corona). They married in the summer of 1981. However that line turned out to be a lie, too. Tom never did become a better man. To this day, Grace swears she does not know what possessed her to say yes. Nevertheless, his bride stuck by him long enough to raise two children. Unlike their father, their two kids have chosen to live normal lives, running only an occasional scam when money is tight.
Tom and Grace live in Newport Beach, CA. When it's not tourist season, Tom can be found panhandling at the entrance of the Fashion Island mall or collecting Social Security checks using the names of the recently departed. Their son Jon is a federal law enforcement agent. Alison freelances as a makeup artist for film and photo shoots and occasionally models. Grace combs the personal ads, swearing she could do better.
