Tom's Story
Life
After graduating from Sarasota High School in 1962, I attended the University of Florida where I majored in business and got my B.S. in Business Administration degree in Dec 1965 in a little over 3 years (trimester system). Worked one fantastic summer during my college years at the New York Worlds Fair in NY where I met my wife of now of almost 50 years. We met working in the same Brass Rail hot dog stand and Wisconsin Pavilion later on.
Enlisted in the US Army after college, attended Infantry OCS (Officer Candidate School) at Ft. Benning, Georgia where I graduated and was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant. Was given a branch transfer to the Adjutant General Corp and served my required two years of active duty at a major US Army command headquarters in the Washington DC area. After wasting 18 months working for Sears Roebuck in their management training department, I finally convinced a stock brokerage firm to hire me as a stockbroker where I toiled the next 10 years with two different major Wall Street investment banking firms and attended graduate school at night studying Finance at Georgia State Universi...Expand for more
ty. During those 10 years, I became much too acquainted with "John Barleycorn" and wasn't the type of husband or father my wife and children deserved. In 1982, I decided to roll the dice and started my own investment firm and investment advisory practice. I was extremely lucky and retired in 1988 at age 44. My time since then has mostly been occupied: managing my portfolio and those of my children and grandchildren; playing golf; internet surfing and moderating a Yahoo private investment related message board that I founded years ago; working in my yard; traveling; enjoying Atlanta's bevy of good restaurants 3 or 4 times a week; going to the movies; and mostly, but not always, enjoying our three grandchildren. We have two daughters one close and close-by and one not so close or close by.
On a closing nostalgic note, for the past 47+ years (since graduating from SHS), I have been listening to the music of Jimmy Reed and Roy Orbison trying like "Cool Hand" Luke to get my mind straight.
Be sure to check out my Community Album where I try and poke some fun at some of my former SHS Class of 62 fellow members.
