Tom's Story

Life I retired as a VP and actuary from Johnson & Higgins (later absorbed by Marsh&McLennan) at age 55 and have pursued mathematics for pleasure (Elliptic Curves / Number Theory). I received an M.S. from University of Chicago in mathematics in 1952.I lived in Manhattan for 45 years and now in Florida with my friend of 47 years.I've travelled extensively but have not returned to Chicago more than 2 or 3 times. I love classical music, art, cooking and literature. Visit often NYC, Paris, Rome and London. I had a great cruise on Oceania Lines in SE Asia last year: Australia, Bali, Java. Thailand. I enjoy The Great Courses, usually science related ones. My best DVD sets were with Professors Alex Filippenko (astronomy) and psychology (Dr. Sapolsky). Also completed many others including Buddhism, Early Christianity, Michelangelo, the Brain, Quantum physics, chaos theory,......about 30 such courses, none in Business or Politics.. All superbly arranged and taught. I always wanted to be a architect w...Expand for more
hen I grew up. My family and friends thought that was a fine idea. As it turns out, they were close and I fell into both artistic creations and mathematics. The University of Chicago gave me a superb preparation as a mathematician; instead I became an excellent Wall Street pension actuary and consultant serving many top notch firms (Goodyear Tire, Michelin Tire, Time, Inc. Allied Stores, Tiffany,....etc. Making lots of money enabled me to retire early and pursue again pure mathematics and art and travel. Ah...I also had a lovely home in East Hampton, L.I. for over 25 very happy years. At my advanced age now, Fort Lauderdale offers me very pleasant and easy living. The one person from my past who I'd most like to see again is Dean MacDonald, because she was my best girl. When I realized that I was Gay, I did not know how to tell her; I fled her instead and always felt very bad about that. But in the 1950s being gay was thought so evil, it was impossible to discuss it with even best friends.
