Tom's Story
I was born in Glendale, CA. When I was two moved to LaGrange. We had a cabin in Minnesota (well, a 100 acre farm with farm house, barn, mile of shoreline on Lake Ida near Alexandria, about 150 miles NW of the Twin Cities). I went to a one room school there for awhile. In 1955 moved to Downers. Went to Pierce Downer, Longfellow, Herrick.
Made horrible grades but aways dated the smartest girls. In college I managed to finish with a 3.85 average and on the Presidents' List (that's being on the Deans' List four times in a row while going full time in each of the quarters). After high school joined the NAVY. Was stationed at Great Lakes just north of Chicago, SanDiego, Seal Beach, Long Beach, and Mare Island, at Vallejo, CA. Was also stationed on a cruiser and an oiler. Overseas bases was in Yokohama, Japan, and Subic Bay in the Philippines. On the crusier, the U.S.S. Galveston CLG-3, was a mess cook, a deck ape, a missile technician, and the Master at Arms of the mess decks. It's a long story. Was on the Hassayampa AO145, an oiler, for a couple of months u...Expand for more
ntil the Navy figured-out that they really didn't need a missile technician aboard an oiler. Took leave (vacation) in Japan, Italy, France, and Hong Kong. Went through the Panama Canal in Jan. of '67. Saw Spain, France, Greece, Malta, Italy, and so on. Glad I joined and glad I got out. Spent the next thirteen years going to schools around the country. Married classmate Kathy Tefft and we had a son, Tommy, born in 1974, Had nightmares about the Navy for seventeen years which, I think, explained the drug and alcohol abuse. Went through two wives until I went cold turkey and have been stone cold free of it all for about ten years and will be so until the day that I die. If Kathy and/or Cheryl are reading this all I can say is that the nightmares have ended along with my drinking. Fran neither smokes nor drinks and we go to church together. I have some nice cats and a wonderful dog, Ginger, so things are not as bad as they would've been. The years of hard outdoor physical labor have paid off in my current good health. Hope you all are as lucky as I am.
