Tom's Story

June 2008 I married my wife, Laura, four years ago in the Presidio in San Francisco, after meeting in a MacIntosh computer class eight years ago. Both our parents stood up for us. It was the first marriage for both of us. Laura is an oncology nurse and I am a general contractor and construction/architectural consultant. We live in Oakland, CA with our dog, Annie, and cat, Ike. We keep busy by taking advantage of living in such a vibrant, diverse, and cosmopolitan culture, the San Francisco Bay Area. Some of our favorite things to do are seeing films, finding new restaraunts to enjoy, attending a great lecture series for the last six years, listening to live music, and visiting with friends and our family, whom mostly live in the area. Of course, exploring California is an endless journey that we never tire of. I go flyfishing in Oregon (where I attended the Univ. of Oregon) a few times a year with old college buddies. We enjoy visiting the Pacific Northwest whenever we can. Laura and I have been to Europe three times (France, and Italy, where I have relatives). For Laura's 50th birthday, we visited Italy again, but this time we started in Rome and went south to Sicily. It was fantastic. I looking forward to bringing Laura to Honolulu to show her my old stomping grounds. I am still in touch with several high school friends and we enjoy talking about the past. We will be voting for Barack Obama in the fall and are looking forward to our beautiful country getting back on track! ...Expand for more
That's it for now. Gotta go ....... It's now March, 2011. Laura and I, and our pets, Lucy (dog) & Enna (cat) are doing well in Oakland, CA. We love our bungalow and neighborhood, which is conveniently located close to most of our everyday needs. Laura continues work at the hospital and I currently have a design/build project in SF. We went to Honolulu a year and a half ago for the wedding of our friend's kids who met at our wedding in 2004. The wedding was on the North Shore of Oahu during the month of November, when the surf was huge. Laura watched world class surfers in big waves and became a fan of surfing. We visited with my old neighbors and friends from high school. She couldn't believe I went to school in such a beautiful place. We went to the Big Island, where I lived for a year in 1985 running a construction project in Hawi. It was my first return visit there in 24 years. Last fall we went to Paris and Provence in southern France. It was a good trip as we love Paris and found Provence to be magnificent. This year we will continue our occasional road trips, combining bird watching in wildlife areas in California and Oregon, and visiting various places along the way. As I write this Japan is reeling from the devastating earthquake, tsunami, and nuclear fallout of a few days ago. It reminds me how fragile the earth is and how we should live in balance with our environment. My heart goes out to the people in Japan affected by this disaster. May we all learn something from this and work together to help others in need.
