Melanie's Story

You knew me in school as Shubi orTom. I'm a transsexual woman and completed my transition on Dec 6, 2011. This is something that has plagued me every single day of my life as long as I can remember. Note that this is gender identity, not sexual preference. Many people automatically "assume" all transgenders are gay because that the incorrect information they've had preached to them read somewhere, or saw on TV. The fact is, while some are gay or lesbian, the majority are heterosexual. Being transsexual myself, it gets a little confusing, even for me, but I guess technically I'm lesbian since I'm not attracted to guys and see myself as female, as others now do also. Having said that, I do support the gay community for a few reasons. First, discrimination is wrong, no matter how you paint it. Second, The public perception is that all transgenders are gay. In fact, transgenders, gay or not, are often easier targets for this type of bigotry than the gay community itself. A cross dresser that doesn't really look like a female is judged to be gay, and the person walking behind her on the street may be gay, but never identified as such unless they're wearing a rainbow flag shirt or something. I'm currently the president of the Erie Sisters Transgender Support Group, with about 1500 on our site as of this writing. I very nearly ...Expand for more
transitioned in 1989, but circumstances at the time would not allow it. Since being elected president of the Erie Sisters, I've been implementing programs to help educate the general public from the misconceptions and sometimes outright lies spread in society about transgenders, and show the public that we have something to offer of value to society, and the fact that we're transgenders is irrelevant and superficial. Had breast augmentation and some feminizing facial surgery in May, 2011. My name was legally changed in July 2011, and as of Dec 6th 2011, I'm now officially a female, having had my reassignment surgery. I guess that still labels me with a sexual preference tag, since now I'm technically a lesbian. My wife had known about Melanie since about 3 months after we met in 1982 and supported, even encouraged me to be myself. The final step of the transition, although she had brought it up and encouraged it, was apparently too much for her. I also suffered discrimination causing me to lose my job. Faced with the loss of a woman I loved and a job I loved and was very good at, I fell into depression in early 2012, nearly committing suicide. I have since met a wonderful lady who is my partner now. The community as a whole has been overwhelmingly supportive and understanding, but I still encounter discrimination in job searches.
