Tonja's Story

Iin H. S. I was always involed with sports. Upon graduation I moved to Phoenix Arizona to play semii-pro softball. Ended up going to the Univ. Of Arizona on scholarship and pitched my team to a National Championship in 1977. In 1975 I pitched my Jr. college team to the Junior College Chamionship. After the U of A, I was drafted to play in St. Louis Missouri to play in the first women's professional league. What a thrill for me. Saw so much of the country including Canada and New Zealand. Never in my life did I think I would get paid for something I enjoyed so much. I ended up coaching softball and baskeball at the Univ. of Missouri, another dream come true. I finally, moved back to Phoenix, AZ, where I continued my softball career and also started working for the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office. In 1989 I got hurt on the job, which resulted in 28 surgeries on my knees and backs. I had to retire for disablility purposes as a Lt. with the Sherrif's Office. I still miss in tremendously. I bought my own home and filled it with things that I love, like CATS. The move to Phoenix opened so many wonderful doors, that I would never experienced if I had not moved to AZ. The hardest thing for me then and still today, is the summer months around here. It's nothing to me 1190 degrees plus on any given day. However, it makes the fall, spring and winter so wonderful. I continued my bowling when I moved her...Expand for more
e and started to bowl in mini-pro tournaments around the southwest. But, again the injury from the job made me retire from that also. So physically my life has slowed way down and was depressing for awhile, but snappd out of it when I started another cause. I started to represent other officers that worked with the sherrif's office who were harassed, terminated, disciplined, etc. I really enjoy it. I didn't think that I would have the skill let alone the desire to become involved with law. So, with schooling I had earlier I have enrolled in law school and hope to work for the prople of law enforcement. If I don't stop aging, I might get the degree. 'when I moved away from Oregon I realized one thing.....I really didn' t get real invlved with H.S. activities other than sports and choir and I regret that I did not open up more to my peers. Most of my friends were older and out of high school, and now I look back and wish that I would have stayed in touch with my friends I had in H. S. So, many people would cross my mind every now and then and I would always wonder what they were up to. Like Beth 'White, the Underwood sisters, and more. I have never been married. Relationships, yes, gut no ring. That was pretty much by choice. I am my own person and don't like to be respnsible for someone else, plus, I''m sure the way I pack up and go to different areas of the states I would be devorced.
