Tracey's Story

Life I am currently living in Midland, MI where I teach elementary general music and middle school choirs. My daughter Amanda is a graduate of Columbia Collge for the Arts in Chicago where she is majored in Musical Theatre Performance and in Directing. She's a helluva singer -- a real "Broadway Baby." She recently moved to Denver (Arvada, actually) where she has a "day job" as head of admissions for Aspen University and is acting as time allows. She has had parts in several independent films and played "conjoined twin who tap dances" in the playwrite's showcase at the Arvada Center. Our son, Alex, is 18. He, too, is into performing and has done many theater productions -- including 5 with his mom! He also sings and plays percussion (oh, and video games. . . he plays video games!) As a senior in HS, he is looking at theatre & music programs at schools here in Michigan. He want to do stand-up and improv comedy -- somewhere like Second City. My husband, Dave, is a salesman for Packaging Corporation of America. He plays tennis -- and is a major supporter of all of the rest of us in our theater & music adventures. When he auditioned for the first time, he landed in the barbershop quartet for "Music Man!:" Since then he has been in "Honk!" and "Seussical." His favorite pastime is to hang out at the lake boating with friends and family. In addition to my work, I am active at the Midland Center for the Arts performing, directing, conducting and teaching. Highlights have included 3 opportunities to share the stage with my son -- "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat" (with Tony-award winning actor Michael Maguire) and Rodgers & Hammerstein's "Cinderella," and the chance to perform with Dave and Alex in "The Music Man." In the spring of 2006 I was awarded the "Wee Kinderspiel" award for dedication to Children's Theater -- I was stunned, honored, and humbled! School All my best memories center a...Expand for more
round music and theater activities. Rex Nelson was my favorite teacher, but I also loved Mr. Zachman, Mr. Weiland, and Mr. Donaldson. I'd rather not discuss "crushes" -- but I do recall having a blast with my Vocal Showcase girlfriends tooling around Arvada tp-ing houses and piling into the Blanton's station wagon and heading to the drive-in, Village Inn, King's for Onion Rings and Cheese Frenchies, or McDonalds for Shamrock Shakes. College I started out studying to be the next big Broadway star at UNC. Made it through one year and part of another before realizing that I didn't have the gumption to pursue that career. Took what was supposed to be one year off to think of a "Plan B." Funny how life works! It took me a dozen years, two marriages (one stuck) and two kids before I figured out my "Plan B." Loved my time at Central Michigan University. Chose it because it was closest, but feel like I landed at the right place. Workplace During High School I worked at KIMN radio for a while -- very cool! I also delivered prescriptions for Lindy's Pharmacy and did modeling/sales for a women's clothing rep. While at UNC I cleaned house for my Mom's boss and worked at KG Men's Store. When I left UNC I got a job as a teller in a bank, then moved on to Cimarron Productions -- where I did everything from keeping the books, to shooting pictures, to booking talent, to writing scripts and copy. It was a great job -- and I loved the people I worked with like family. After moving to Michigan, I managed a small resort in Gaylord, Michigan, then 3 years later, went back to school at CMU. Teaching was really worth waiting for. I love going to work (most days) and think that -- if I have to work for a living -- this is the way I like to do it. This is my 12th year. I got such a late start that the shuttle bus from the nursing home will be dropping me off at school before I get to retire -- so it's a good thing I like it!
