Trudy's Story

Life Well, where shall I begin...my life upon graduating has been to say the least, an "adventure." About one year after graduation, I moved to Dayton, Ohio, lived there for about 2 years and returned to Waynesboro. I worked a few dead end jobs and in 1978, I enrolled in Cosmetology school, passed the Pennsylvania State Board exams and became a licensed hairdresser in 1979. I had wanted this as a career when I graduated athough it took a bit longer to achieve than I had anticipated. I worked at two salons in order to gain experience and on April Fool's Day in 1980, I opened my own salon. During my junior and senior high years, I became interested in reading Edgar Allen Poe and Agatha Christie. It was during this time that I also read about the infamous murderess, Lizzie Borden. During the years that I was in business, I continued to read anything and everything about infamous crimes and criminals, the Cosa Nostra, investigation, forensics, and also developed an interest in psychology. Although I enjoyed being a hairdresser and an employer, I found myself becoming increasingly unsatisfied and wanted to pursue my true interest. I decided that if I wanted to go to college, I had better do it and so I sold my business and enrolled in the Administration of Justice program at Hagerstown Junior College, which is now Hagerstown Community College. I was not only a wife and mother of two small children, but was also full-time student. I took classes for one year and decided to transfer my credits to Shippensburg University. I graduated with honors in 1991 with a B.S. in Criminal Justice with a concentration in Corrections and was inducted into the National Criminal Justice Honor Society. Even though I no longer work in a salon, I still renew my Cosmetologist license. A month after I graduated from college, I accepted a position at the Franklin County Prison as a corrections officer where I gained not only practical experience but insight into o...Expand for more
ffenders, the etiology behind their crimes, and a better understanding of the criminal justice system and how the scales of justice are not truly equal as socio-economics do have an impact upon a legal outcome. After one year at the facility, I was offered a position as a Juvenile Case Coordinator working with special needs juvenile offenders who were in placement in foster care through Perry County, Dauphin County, Franklin County, and Cumberland County. This was the beginning of my casemanager career. Unfortunately, I became ill, needed surgery, and could no longer withstand the stress and travel and so I resigned. After I had recouperated and had a much needed rest, I returned to working in a salon for a short period of time but I knew that my heart was no longer in the profession. I was reading the classified adds one day and found that there was a casemanager position open at the Franklin County Homeless Shelter. I faxed my resume, was called for an interview, and was hired....7 years ago. Although the job is stressful at times, it entails working with homeless ex-offenders, probationers, and state parolees who due to their arrest and incarceration, lose their housing and often their family and / or friend support systems. Others who are referred for shelter services include the mentally ill, those with substance abuse addictions, the elderly, single mothers with children, single fathers with children, and people from all walks of life. In hindsight, I guess that there is not one segment of society that I have not worked with in some manner. It is my responsibility to help them change their lives in order to ensure that they will succeed upon discharge from the program. I was promoted to Site Coordinator and Lead Case Manager in 2005 So, this is an overview of where my life has taken me since I graduated and even though I went through divorce, illness, and just about anything else that could be thrown at me, I wouldn't change a thing.
