Valerie's Story

Life Where do I start? How 'bout after high school? After LHS, I attended and graduated from Smith College (located in Northampton, Mass, about 90 miles west of Boston, or as the natives call it BEANTOWN). I win the prize for going the furthest away to college and seeing the most snow in the mid-late '90s. Did four years in the Northeast change my accent? In a way, yes...I pronounce some words differently, for example credit cahd. Four years in New England also changed my perception of people-I met and made friends with people from all over the United States (I found many Southerners there-two of my best friends there were from Houston and Tennessee) and the world (Croatia, France, China, Malaysia, I could go on. And yes, you can have fun at a women's college. Spent my junior year of college (1996-97) at Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, NY (2 hrs north of NYC by Metro North Railroad) In 1998 I graduated with a degree in music-emphasis in composition. I still live in Dallas (I honestly thought I would be living in NYC by now, but, oh well, things happen). I work during the week at an auto loan company as a customer service rep and on weekends at Barnes & Noble. .The latter is a kick a** job. The people are wonderful (if you are reading this and work or have worked at B&N 1838, Hello everyone (current & former employees)! Especially Shawn, Ryan, Ellen, Scott, Marcie, and Chris I. (to the last three, if you are reading this, please e-mail me through Classmates.com, I have a question/favor to ask you). I spend my free time (what there is of it) doing the following: sleeping, going to and watching movies, collecting stuff (cookbooks, Simpsons stuff, Muppets items), watching TV (my fave TV shows are 'The Simpsons', 'Tonight Show with Jay Leno', 'Whose Line Is It Anyway?'), reading, listening to music I am single, no kids, no man...Just your typical twenty-something, Gen X-er still trying to figure out her purpo...Expand for more
se in life...And counting down to her 30th birthday in Aug '06. And am I doing anything remotely close to my major? Nope. I would love to get back in the industry somehow. I still have my old, very rough copies of my student compositions. And a VERY BAD recording of one of my pieces. As soon as I get a keyboard, and brush the dust off of my old Music Theory 101 textbook that I STILL have from 1995, I might just compose stuff for fun. Anyhoo, I've blabbed on long enough-Please e-mail me if you remember me. School High school memories-um, my two faves are: 1.Rear ending into what I thought was Denver H's beloved pickup, only to drag him out of Mr. Lund's Spanish class and find out from him it was some other guy's truck; 2. Our senior trip to Gulf Shores, AL My biggest regret from high school was not attending my senior prom. I should have gone with the son of one of my mom's friends but I was still embarrassed with the dancing skills of my homecoming date (let's just describe it as 'BAD WHITE GUY DANCING'). I would have felt more comfortable with someone I was familiar with. Oh, how I wish I could relive it somehow. College From Smith-would love to hear from any Lawrence House residents in the '94/'95 & '95/'96 school years. Especially Katherine Buffington. Any Smithies who live in the 214 part of Dallas-doesn't matter what year, decade....Would love to hear from you and about any activities for the Smith College Club of Dallas; any other Dallas or Collin County Smithies from the '90s want to get together? Workplace My most fun jobs are/have been Smith College Campus School (where I worked in the Campus School library-where the average age of the clientele was roughly 9) and Barnes & Noble (I am a book lover). Would love to hear from Barnes & Noble #1838 employees that I know or may have known (especially Marcie, Marjorie, Scott, Chris I.); and from Linens 'n Things #405 employees.
