Valerie's Story
Life has been good, full of ups and downs, but good.
I have a wonderful husband; we've been married 39 years. Steve retired from the Sate of LA as the Quality Assurance Director of Vocational Rehab. several years ago and is on his second careen. He works at a local community bank as their Bank Secrecy Act & Security Officer.
We've raised 2 great sons. Shane, 33 lives in Savannah with hid wife, Courtney. Shane is the sous chef at B Matthews and Courtney is events coordinator at the Marshall House, one of Savannah's finest Bed & Breakfast establishments. Kevin, our 25 yr old has a BS in Math from SLU. He's is working on an alternative teaching certificate and still tutors in the Math lab. also tutors a number of students privately.
I have had more careers than I can shake a stick at. My last position was doing one of the most rewarding things I've ever done with my life. I'm worked in a private social services facility as the Office Manager. I worked 9 - 10 hour days that just fly by. The staff is 15 women; 2 office staff and the rest a mix of full & part time direct service providers. I only worked there for about fifteen months, but we all felt like I'd been there forever. I'd finally gone back to work after a freak ailment kept me on the sidelines for about 7 years. Besides working most of the time since High School, I did manage to pull together an Associates Degree in General Studies in 2000. I started in Elementary Ed and switched to Accounting & Business, when I realized that with over 120 hours and still too many to go to get the accounting degree, I decided that an Associates degree was better then none.
Over the years I have found enjoyment away from work and school in oil painting, making jewelry and as I've always done: reading. I've taught Sunday School to preschoolers and led women's Bible studies. I had jobs as varied as Insurance Claims adjuster and job coach for the disabled; banker and church secretary.
When we moved to the Northshore in 1975 we really put down roots. We bought our first house in 1976 and lived there for 8 years and we've been in our current house for over 24 years.
We've always had pets. We love cats and dogs and have had either one or the other or both all of our married lives. Right now we only have one dog. Snowflake is an American Eskimo with all the best of their characteristics. She is sweet and smart and loyal and a great companion.
Deciding that my income was not worth the extra taxes we paid, I retired for good from the work world in March 2010.
We have our first grandchild on the way; she due to arrive in March, 2011. I cannot wait to be a full time Grandma
