Valerie's Story
I am Val Larson and I attended Rainier K-12. Yes, I am one of those kids. I graduated in 2002 and was accepted to all 7 colleges I applied for. I chose WSU (GO COUGS!) because I like Eastern Washington and they gave me the most scholarship money.
Once at WSU, I went in with the intention of getting a degree in Geology but found out I am not really a math or science person. I don't enjoy math, but I do like certain sciences. I changed my mind during my sophomore year to Sport Management with a minor in Leadership Studies.
While at WSU, I played club fastpitch (Pac-10/12 fastpitch still does not currently exist) and we traveled all over the country to places that included Maryland, West Virginia and California. We did well. Because I changed majors, I had to be there a 5th year to complete all of my course requirements. I walked with my class May 2007 and received my degree that following December after my internship at Linfield College.
When I was at Linfield, a small division III college in McMinnville, Oregon, I had the opportunity to work with the athletic director and the Sports Information Director. I even got to work with Scott Brosius, who played for the New York Yankees and won a few World Series. It was right up my alley. I loved it. Because of the economy in 2008, I had to return home because they could not support my salary (the budget was cut back).
At home, I tried to find work to pay my bills. It was mostly seasonal and part-time. No one really wanted to hire full-time at that point. Some of those jobs included, working at my high school as a coach. Middle School girls' basketball a...Expand for more
nd high school fastpitch. It was a great learning experience and I hope to get back into it someday.
I also worked at Yelm Dental as a hygiene assistant for 4 years and learned a lot about oral hygiene and taking care of yourself. I even helped out with the dental days that Rainier had participated in. I felt it was time to move on and so I started applying elsewhere and landed myself a job in the hospitality field. I worked as an assistant manager at the hotel in Yelm and very thankful I am not doing that anymore.
As of January 2023, I am on my seven year "workiversary" at Labor and Industries. I've worked with the Human Resources Dept, the mail room, a program called Retrospective Rating and I am now a program assistant with the Office of the Medical Director Dept. I also had a small stint with WSDOT for about a month. I also have some time to volunteer, mostly for relay for life with Yelm Dental.
On the lighter side, I've gotten to do some traveling through my hobby geocaching. It is a GPS treasure hunt for those of you who are curious. I have been doing this since 2010 and it has allowed me to go to places, I have never thought of going to. I've been to 30 states, Route 66, Area 51 and various local landmarks and hotspots. I've also geocached internationally to six different countries.
Nine years ago, I met a guy through my hobbies, Ben, who is a firefighter/EMT in Tenino, works maintenance at JBLM and he proposed to me in Leavenworth in July 2022. Of course, I said yes! We are getting married July 2024.
I have two kitties, a Siamese cat named Wade and a ginger cat named Oliver. They are precious.
