Valerie's Story

Life I have three grown children: Christi-Anne, Rebecca and, BJ. I married when I was 19, and we moved to NYC soon after. I have 7 grandchildren and I love being a grandmother! Have two cats who are neurotic...don't they say that pets' behavior mimics their owners? Oh, no!! I have good friends, a home I love, and my books. I've lived in several different states. I moved to Hawaii to live near my parents and brother for a few years and worked at the Westin Kauai. The hotel was destroyed by Hurrican Iniki after I left the island. So sad.... it was the most fun job I ever had. I have lived in an isolated adobe home in the Mojave Desert (it smelled like sage, and the sunsets were magnificent); Manhattan NY (the Museum of Natural History is wonderful); Buffalo, NY (best zoo I've seen yet); Niagara Falls, NY (the Canadian side of the falls is prettier); Kapaa, Hawaii (the prettiest place on earth); Jamestown, Missouri (pop: 301!) where I learned to bake bread, raise and harvest vegetables for winter and, finally, Jefferson City, Missouri. My children and grandchildren also live here. I am retired from the Missouri State Dept. of Mental Health/Division of Alcohol and Drug Abuse and am now enjoying outings with friends, camping, antiquing, listening to my beloved band the Beach Boys (still have all my old albums).....and, my long-time passion.... reading. I also enjoy doing whatever I want whenever I want (freedom!). I loved my traveling days, but have now finally settled down. Now it's vacation travel only. I don't ever plan on moving back to California because I love the country: the many lakes and rivers, the changing of the seasons, very nice peo...Expand for more
ple and even the snowy days of beautiful Missouri (and there ARE hills here....Kansas is the state that is flat!). The one thing I really really miss: the Pacific ocean! I was going to Hawaii once a year until my parents both died within 6-months of each other in 2010. I still want to pick up the phone and call my mother when I forget a word! My brother, who also lived in Hawaii, died in June 2012. I so miss my family. I have gone back to California to visit relatives, but haven't seen Hacienda Heights since I graduated from Los Altos. College I am a "serial college student." Went to College of the Desert, 29 Palms, CA; Columbia College, Missouri; and Lincoln University, Missouri. All those transferred credits were a hassle!! Believe it or not, I was NOT the oldest person in some of the classes. I loved college....found out that history, which I always disliked, is now fascinating. Major switched from Honors English/Psychology with a minor in History. I still like to take classes here and there just for fun (photography, American history, creative writing). Workplace Retired! Have had some very diversified jobs: worked at the China Lake Missile Base in Ridgecrest California as Purchaser of certified parts for Harm and Sparrow missiles (did you know that every part of a US weapon used in combat has to be certifiably manufactured in the US?), Camp Director for the Westin Kauai in Hawaii, several short-term jobs and Certification Technician for the MO Dept. of Mental Health/Department of Alcohol and Drug Abuse (my longest employment). Now I substitute teach when I feel the need to have a nervous breakdown, and volunteer for the local hospice.
