Vicki Adams's Story
Life
I teach 6th grade English and am the Language Arts Department Chair at Calhoun Middle School (formerly Denton Jr. High) in Denton, Texas. Teaching school is the best job in the whole world. I have been married since 1981 to John Storrie (DHS, 73'), and I have two sons, Adam Miller (DHS,'90 Covington Middle School History teacher in Austin) and Zachary Miller (DHS,'93;
My husband and I have been skydiving since 1989. He has 3,000+ jumps, and I have 1,500 ( I have recently retired from jumping). We own a skydiving business, Storrie Parachute Works, in Denton, Texas, where my husband sells skydiving gear, repacks parachutes for sport jumpers and for pilots, and makes custom photography vests.
We are active in Denton Bible Church, and husband John plays the violin in the church orchestra.
I now spend my skydiving money on seeing the world and often travel with my two best friends. I have been to Germany, Austria, Italy (twice), Panama, Egypt, Thailand (3 times), China, Vietnam, Cambodia, Peru, Slovenia, Spain, Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay, France, Nicaragua, Belize, Honduras, Guatemala, El Salvador, Poland, England (twice), Czech Republic, Scotland, Turkey, Bolivia, Colombia, Thailand , Myanmar, and Mexico in the past 14 years. I am always trying to improve my Spanish, and travel certainly helps. We do leave our wonderful husbands at home. W...Expand for more
hen you go with your husband, it is "twice the money and half the fun."
My first grandchild, Flynn, was born in 2003 to older son Adam and wife Lisa. They are expecting baby sister Cleo in Sept. of 2007. With younger son Zach's marriage in 2007 to Julie, we now have granddaughters Alyssa (5) and Emily (2 1/2) YeeHaw! Life is great and just keeps getting better! God is so good!
College
I loved attending TWU. I had some wonderful professors there..Tim Hoye, Martha Swain, A. Elizabeth Taylor, Joyce Thompson, P.J. Karr-Kidwell, and Charles Bruce. I was an older student(28) with two small children and an unsupportive (now EX) husband. I had the opportunity to work in the TWU Library with Mickey Dudley and Elizabeth Snapp who were both wonderful. Dr. Swain and Dr. Taylor helped me get several History Dept. scholarships which really helped. I always donate to the History Dept. scholarship fund to help other non-traditional students. I am so proud to be a TWU graduate.
I received my master's degree from UNT. It was not as personal an experience as TWU was.
Workplace
Teaching school is the best job in the world, and 6th graders are the very best students to have. I love my job and feel fortunate to work with great people who make each day so much fun. I also am blessed to have the opportunity to touch many young people's lives in a positive way.
