Vicki's Story
Life
Hi, all!! Wow, these past 30 years have been full... college, work, motherhood, and now being a musician's wife... I am happy and content. I went to college in both New Mexico and California; the extremes in lifestyles helped set my opinion that Indiana is a nice middle ground after all.
I have 2 terrific boys, Cameron is in high school and Brian is in the US Navy. My husband, Tom Huse, old family friend & fellow Twinkie, is a musician and auto body painter.
I'm into home life with gardening, home repair, scrap booking, church, and my family. I'm also a painter's prep for my husband at Clark Truck Equipment. My quirkiest hobby is collecting elongate pennies like the one from Indiana Beach Arcade.
All those years working in offices made me a paperwork nut, so I'm really having fun collecting Twin Lakes 1983 Alumni records. I may have been quiet and bashful in school, but after a benign tumor scare in California, I saw the error of my ways and want to make up for not telling you old friends and acquaintances then how much I enjoyed every one of you now. Believe it or not, even the pains-in-the-rear had a good point or two. Or three. :0)
School
*I started out at Frontier for Kindergarten in the old Chalmers school. I loved to "make" my show-and-tell. I told people I'd grow up to be an artist. At graduation, the teacher told me she 'knew' I'd be an artist.
*Frontier 1st and 2nd grade is full of so many fond memories, such as wild buttercups in the playground (no pesticides like those today), kissing boys so they'd leave us girls alone at recess (they remember and I'm so embarrassed), and trying to convince everyone that toads didn't cause warts (more animal interest). Recess ended when teacher rang a hand bell. I still have the 2nd grade cookbook that was supposed to have our mothers' favorite recipes (but so many cookies...).
*We moved to Yeoman Elementary for 3rd grade. Always craft-minded, I see from old report cards that I was playing with art supplies at my desk when I should have been doing classwork. They let me into Brownie Scouts early when I pleaded. I was told not to bring in any mor...Expand for more
e crawdads and teach my friends how to care for them - their mom's didn't enjoy my generosity. I loved the small school, and the multi-leveled SRA packets were a blast. Kids could benefit from both of those these days.
*Jr High at Roosevelt. Hmm. Art class and enameled jewelry. Wood Shop. "Dot every I and cross every T" in Mrs. Thacker's English -- annoying then, but it was a good lesson. She will groan if you remind her now.
*TLHS. Mr Powlen's enunciation demands -- another good lesson. Business Law. More Art, Mechanical and Architectural Drafting, work on the sets for the plays and musicals, 1983 Yearbook cover, Mr Leffler's still life displays and drawing with the right side of my brain. Art museums and Symphony music. Cool. I do wish I'd have taken more Math and English, though.
College
Studied Graphic Design at Eastern New Mexico University, New Mexico State, and the College of San Mateo in California. Although I didn't complete my studies, I would still love to do so some day.
Workplace
What a variety. Whatever the job, I've always tried to follow my Pop's advice, "If you've gotta be a janitor, be the best damn janitor they ever had." I've been employed as: Dorm receptionist, Car Hop, Waitress, Fry Cook, Food Prep, Cake Decorator, Sales Clerk, Cashier, Maid, Nanny, Customer Support, Data Entry, Fry Cook, Administrative Support for investment firm, Inventory Control, Records Warehousing, Accountant, Sign Painter, School Volunteer, Sunday School Teacher, Mom. (The "Mom" job combines all previously mentioned positions.)
I enjoy my Graphics and Research jobs the most. Thank you, Art Leffler for suggesting I take Drafting classes in High School -- I found a love of tiny details.
Military
I didn't serve in the military, but was born overseas when Dad served in the Navy. (Roger Van Voorst served in Scotland from Feb 1964 to June 1966) .Many others in my family are veterans: Uncles (Bill Overman, Bob Putt, Jack Stine, Bob Van, Bob Kirts), and Cousins (Tim Stine, Wally Decker), In-laws (Ed Huse, Brett Huse, Dale Huse, Cyndi Huse), as well as my kid's dad, his dad and two uncles. Thank you veterans.
