Vivian's Story

Life Hello - I've been married to Chris since 1993. No children. Love Cats and Dogs. Currently living in Westminster. My interests are, of course - Politics - the conservative kind. Community activism, reading - contemporary. Television? Gray's Anatomy, American Idol, and of course the Fair and Balanced News Station FOX 8-). I was a bit of a hard-case in High School. I had been in and out of about 10 schools by the time I got to Westminster High. My mother would send me to private schools every chance she had (meaning when she had the money). I went to Ray M. Schmitt School, then to Westminster Christian School; then back to Ray M. Schmitt, then to Fryburger Elementary; Johnson Jr. High; then to Westminster Christian School again; Montessori School; Amhurst College Prep; Oakmont Private Academy; and Westminster High. Now that only counts as 8 schools; but when my parents had the money I would go to private schools. So, my education was a bit disjointed and it was hard to form friendships. When I got to Westminster High, I found it pretty easy academically. I loved Mr. Batelli in Business Law, typing and any other class I could get with him. I loved Mr. Woodbury and was essentially his student aide in several "industrial arts" classes. He was like having a wonderful second dad. I loved Mrs. Novack in Speech Communications as a sophomore...it's where I couldn't understand what "youth in Asia" (euthanasia)was; but I ended up getting elected as President during the parliamentary procedures exercise. I also was impeached because I voted my conscience on an issue (as the tie breaker) rather than with my majority party. LOL I felt my soul was more important than the "job" of being president. Mr. Sampson was terrific in the Business class. Mrs. Flowers was terrific in Creative Writing. I remember I started out in Mr. Boyles class for that...however he started reading a story about an autopsy and it was so graphic, and my imagination was so intense that it made me sick so I left the classroom and never went back. Got Mrs. Flowers later for Creative Writing, and she was probably one of my favorite teachers. Always encouraging us and never a bad word about anyone. Because I got there in my sophomore year, I didn't have any friends that I had built relationships with in my freshman year, because I was in private schools (three of them) as a freshman. When I landed at WHS; I only knew one person who was a daughter of a person my sister worked with. She took me under her wing; but she smoked, so we hung out with the smokers in front of the library or behind Building J. A big group, most of whom did not graduate. In my Jr. year, my Dad, a Marine, went to Vietnam. In the Fall when I started as a Senior; I went to the front of the library to ...Expand for more
see the crowd and they all had black arm bands on. I asked them what they were for and they told me they were protesting the War in Vietnam. They told me to wear one. I told them no. I told them my father was over in Vietnam fighting that war and I would feel like I was betraying what he believed in (and was risking his life for) if I wore it. For that I got a bunch of rude remarks and some girl wanted to fight me over something I cannot even remember. It was a pretty tumultuous time for me. I was mowing lawns at home, helping my mother go to the commissary, trying to keep up with school and writing my dad almost every night. I didn't want to hang out with this crowd of "black armband wearing anti-war demonstrators" so I walked away from them. I had hardly any friends during my Senior year, but I did okay as a loner. My former "friends" then decided I was a "narc" which very much amused me. But I ended up graduating, and 90% of them did not. After high school I got a job and started going to college at night at Goldenwest College (on the lifetime plan). I took classes that helped me in whatever job I was doing at the time, but didn't stick to the plan that led to a degree. When I later figured out (not too smart at the time) that I had a lot of college credits; but I needed core courses, I began to take some. I had moved to Orange and went to Rancho Santiago/AKA Santa Ana College by then, and took Political Science (among other classes). My mother was big into politics and how the nation's politics affect our daily lives. But this teacher stirred something up in me. He told all the students if they ever ran for office he would immediately change their grades whenever in the future they did that; to an A. Well I got a B so I wasn't too concerned. But I did later run for office and won. So I wonder if he would still change my grade??? LOL Anyway, I just recently retired from the University of California after working there for after 28 years. So now I'm trying to figure out what I want to do with the rest of my life. I turned 56 years old yesterday. So the golden years are approaching. Mrs. Flowers told me that someday I would be a writer, so maybe I'll try my hand at that. Grammatically, however, I am not sound so thank God for editors. I would really like to know what happened to some of the "smokers", but I rarely see a name I recognize as one of those folks on this site because most didn't graduate. I wonder if they are still protesting wars.... UPDATE: In July 2010, my husband, my dad and I (along with the pets) moved to Oregon. So I am far away from Westminster, but it is beautiful here. I saw Bobbie Moffet show up on this site! He lived around the corner from where I lived, he lived on Trask. Nice to see him here.
