Wallace's Story

Life Attended Skagit a couple of years, married Sandy Meins, went into the service (VietNam, Texas). Hired by EDS (Perot) worked in New York City (adios Sandy, hello Alma), Columbia, SC, Dallas and Chicago. Returned to Columbia and worked at one firm (PMSC) for 24 years ending as AVP Operations Manager of the data center. Took a job at Blue Cross in 2003. I was in IT my whole career. 4 kids Bobby 1968, Stella 1976, Alan 1982 and Amy 1988. All four are married and all have finished college (Bobby from Georgia Tech, Stella from UGA and MUSC Med School, Alan from USC (University of South Carolina) and Amy, my little last, also from USC. We have seven wonderful grandkids. Bobby has 3, twins Anna Rush and John Wallace, born in February 2002 and Reid born in June 2004. Stella has a son, Henry, born in March 2007 and a daughter Camille born in October 2010. Alan’s son Harrison was born in January 2017 and Amy’s daughter Estela Jeanne (Essa) was born in June 2019. Life has treated us very well. I have been blessed and I couldn't be happier. Alma and I celebrate our 1974 wedding anniversary each September 12. She is the absolute light of my life. Retired in 2017 and spend more time traveling. To date: Australia, New Zealand, France, Italy, Spain, Scotland, Holland, Germany, Austria, Hungary, Colombia, Mexico, Guatemala, Puerto Rico plus all US States except Alaska and several Canadian Provinces. We own (with six other families) a cottage on Seabrook Island which puts us on the beach and in Charleston (SC) a lot. No complaints! School Certainly no great student. Coasted through high school looking forward to the weekends and playing in a band. Remembering the guys, Robinson, Ray and Hoezee .. some really great times. Wish I could buy the '57 Chevy back .. same for the '64 Comet Caliente. Lotta fun in those cars. Grades weren't going to get me in to UW so it was Skagit until I figures out what I wanted to be when I grew up. College Did Skagit for a couple of years in the Mid-Management program. After that, took another semester of classes and got a draft notice. Figured I would enlist and at least get a "dream sheet" choice for a job. On a lark, I picked Data Processin...Expand for more
g and have been in that field since 1968. It's easy to do something that turns into a passion. Workplace EDS sent me to New York City. This poor kid from Sedro Woolley didn't know what to think. I continued to thrive on the challenge of EDS working on Wall Street in Brokerage for 3 years until I moved with the company to Columbia, South Carolina to work in Banking and Life Insurance. Four years later, I went through the EDS Systems Engineering program in Dallas. I was assigned to a P&C (CNA) in Chicago. Only stayed there for a year when some former colleagues gave me a call to return to Columbia with a new outfit, a division of an Insurance company, which later became Policy Management Systems. Grew with PMSC, always around computers, ending up as the Operations Manager in the Data Center. Life was great! Then, in 1998, all of the Information Technology was outsourced to Lockheed Martin. Same desk, somewhat the same job. It was OK, however, I should have seen the handwriting on wall. In the summer of 2001 I heard the words no one every wants to hear .. "Don't bother to come in tomorrow" .. I was laid off. I did some consulting, then September 11 happened and it took another seven months before I got a job with a venture Dot-com (Agilera) that lasted only eight months. They ended up going out of business (it was acquired then sold) and I found employment at BlueCross and BlueShield right here in Columbia in early 2003. It was a second chance to "finish right" and I welcomed the challenges and assignments. Things have worked out better than I could have dreamed. Let's see how our hero ends up in a few more years. Stay Tuned! Military Joined the Army in January 1968. Fort Lewis, Fort Harrison then Vietnam. Returned in the summer of 1969 to Fort Sam Houston in Texas. Military was exactly what I needed. You could work hard and be recognized. Made rank quickly, ending up as a Staff Sergeant E6 with 13 months in grade when I was discharged in January 1971. That got a look from Ross Perot who had begun a data processing company (EDS) a few years earlier and was looking for those military types who could help build that company. For me, it was a match made in heaven.
