Walter's Story
When I was at Teachers' College in Toronto in the 1970' s I was looking for a place to stay. As I walked along Danforth Aveneue I saw a small notice on a community bulletin board about a room in a house close to where my classes were held. I went to the place and after I knocked on the door, a little old lady opened it part way and asked who I was where I was from and what I wanted. I...Expand for more
said I was Walter Black , I was from Fergus and I wanted to see the room.. She asked me if I knew a Bella Gilder. I said " I should- she's my mother."
My mother had had an aunt who was married and had 17 children. When her husband died, she married a widower with 16 children. The old lady was one of the 33 children. Of course I got the room- at $7 a week. It was the 1970's, remember!
