Weldon's Story

Life I am a project manager, business analyst, and lease property on the side. So here, I am in 2005 wondering what everyone else has been doing. I went to the 30-year reunion and did not recognize anyone (they look so old). I took a position at Workflow One (Relizon) as a Project Manager/Business Analyst on 1/03/06. My manager outsourced my position on 5/07/07. I saw it coming, but have been sitting at home ever since. The company has continued to pay my salary for the next 4 months. It is good to be me... I have a year in which to acquire employment. No rush. School Grade School (St George/Johns) I started school at St Georges on Belknap in 1962. Later, transferring to Saint Johns on Glenview in 1964. Raised hell there. Wrote my own Playboy using all the students’ names in it. They expelled me in 1969. I guess they didn't appreciate my book club. Junior High School (HJHS) Went to Hurst Junior High School. That was fun. At first, several students started fistfights with me. Their way of saying, "Welcome to HJHS" now prove to us you’re not a wussy. That year was the only time I participated in a school sit-down against the Vietnam War. Ended up being punished for missing classes. The next year I went back to St. John's. I finally graduated with my 8th grade class in 1971. My homeroom teacher; Mrs. Swartz was still threatening to expel me on that last day. High School (Nolan & LD Bell) I started 9th grade at Nolan High School. That was a fun year. I played football. The coach gave me the nickname "Wells". That stuck for many years. In 10th grade I spent most my time running around in Craig Norton's barracuda or at the school lake. I dropped out of school, went to work fulltime. That was a stupid idea. The following fall, I enrolled at LD Bell High School to retake 10th grade. I worked my ass off to finish grades 10, 11, and 12 in 2 years. I graduated with my class in 1975. I moved out of my parents’ house that summer. Larry, Steve, and I moved into the Pecan St Apartments behind the Bellaire shopping center. School Smoking Area Funny thing happened to me. I was physically slim and my hair was long, past my shoulders. I was sitting on the edge of the cement in the smoking area with a large group of girls (12 to 14). My back is to the school hall entrance and to my left is the stairs down to the parking lot. Then all of a sudden, this tall girl came out of the building. She came right up behind me and asked if anyone had a tampon. I turned around and looked up at her. She turned totally red. I said, "No, I'm completely out". Everyone started laughing. I thought she was going to die. I will never forget that look on her face. Loss of Friends I ran around mostly with the 1974 and 1976 classmates. The main ones were Donald Duffek, Steve Cobb, Glen Johnson, and a few others. I found out in the last year or so that Donald died. That breaks my heart. We grew up next door to each other, from age 5 to graduation. He was my friend and always treated me well. I recently found out that another friend I ran around with passed away in 2001. His name is Jimmy Russell and lived off Cheryl Ave in Hurst. Jimmy asked me to go with him to "Woodstock" in 1969. I asked my parents, but they said "No". I was 12 years old at the time. Jimmy left without me and came back 2 weeks later. Great Guy. College (TCJC) At the end of summer in 1975, my parents made me an offer. I could move home if I went to college. The idea of college had never crossed my mind before. So, I accepted. I went to TCJC from 9/75 to 5/83 and attained an AAS in Data Processing on 12/79. I eventually acquired minors in engineering and management. I worked in banking from 1980 to 1988. Chris (wife) and I stayed in Los Angeles from 1986 to 1988, until I was ready to go back to school. Back to School (UNT) We came home to Texas (1988), so I could go to UNT. It was there; at age, 31 that I found out I have dyslexia and short-term memory loss. That explains why I struggled in school as a child. I have to put out 3 times the effort others do. We were married in the Chapel at TWC in Denton. Both of us were so stressed out... Our house was crowded for days. I wished that all our relatives would just go away… We lived in Argyle until completing my BBA. I applied to several schools, for a double major (Law & MBA degrees) but none accepted me, I overreached. I started my MBA instead at UNT and need 3 classes to finish. Workplace Career I went to work for Commercial Computer Services in January of 1980. It was my first job after my degree. I supported an online S&L. It was downtown Fort Worth on 7th St.. I made $10,300 a year. It had to be the lowest paying job in the nation. Talk about poor. Everyone in the office went to a bar (across from the Star Telegram) every night and closed it down. My boss took me there every night and bought my beer. I think he felt guilty............I supported an online S&L. They called me "Rookie". First National Bank (across from Burnet Park) hired me to work on Demand Deposit Systems. They changed their name to First United Services. I later became their Bank c...Expand for more
onversion project manager. I left after InterFirst Services (BOA) bought us. I took a job in North Dallas supporting and converting S&L's to a new data center at Peer Services. I left there to work at a software firm, Shared Financial Systems (CA) to build a new Time Deposit system. As soon as the project completed, they let us all go. This is where I met my future wife, Christina Riley. In 1986, I accepted an offer as project manager in Los Angeles, California installing an IRA system (now Wells Fargo). In 1987, Chris and I were caught in the downtown LA earthquake. She almost went back to Texas without me. Chris and I stayed until I was ready to go back to school. We came home to Texas (1988), so I could go to UNT. Working Again I started working at NorthStar Computer Company in 1991. Chris became very unhappy after my Dad died. They were very close. One day I found a divorce attorneys card in her purse. On the back of the card was a down payment with a balance. Chris and I divorced in 1994 and she moved to Boulder, Col. She restarted her life again, as if she had no past. Occasionally she would send me an email stating, “You don’t know me”, followed by another with “You never did”. She shows me how resentful and mean she could be (at least toward me). I will always miss her friendship. I ended up with a house and 3 dogs. She got all the money. I lived in North Dallas until 2000. I made 2 great girlfriends there, Gwen and Gina. Gwen married and moved away. Gina suddenly died from unknown causes on my birthday, 11/12/2000. I miss them both. NorthStar closed in 2002 due to the economy. I started working for a new company; and named it Toner Express in 1996 and closed it in 2000. In 2002, I started working for Texas Business Solutions in Fort Worth as a project manager and business analyst. I acquired several homes in Ft. Worth and lease the properties on the side. So here, I am in 2005 wondering what everyone else has been doing. I went to the 30-year reunion and did not recognize anyone (they look so old). I took a position at WorkflowOne (Relizon) as a Project Manager/Business Analyst on 1/03/06. My position outsourced on 5/17/07 and I have been sitting at home ever since. I was in a car accident in 2006, which shattered my Femur. I had a difficult time working. The first few months I worked from home. When I went back they had already hired one person and about to hire another. They decided they could hire 2 resources for the amount they paid me. They did not give me any advanced notice, which is not legal for companies with employees greater than 5,000. TUC made the company pay my full salary for the next 4 months. It is good to be me... Not so good, I have not worked since 5/07. It has been a log year for job-hunting... In July of '08, the stars aligned for me. I received a large royalty bonus for leasing my gas rights under my house. I received double for my stimulus package. I received two job offers at about the same time. One a contract in Houston from Capital One and another a perm in Austin from Farm Credit Bank of TX. I accepted the Austin position with a sign-on bonus. You can see people ski on the river outside the window..............nice! I am living in Extended Stay Hotels in Austin and coming home to Fort Worth on the weekends. I will start Wednesday, July 23, 2008. Today is Friday, September 18, 2009. At the beginning of the month I lost my job in Austin at Farm Credit Bank of Texas. The place is a communication nightmare. Management does not ask, they perceive. We were working on a $30 million project and trying to build project management procedures at the same time. It is hard to do with a bank that has never used "Project Management" or "Quality Control". So much resistance from IT Management and Staff. I tried to hold on until the recession was over but did not make it. I hope to get a job in the D/FW area next... I am happy to be back. The 300 mile drives to and from Austin are wearing me down. My mother’s doctor diagnosed her with aggressive breast cancer. I need to stay in D/FW to help her. It is a new day... after spending a year and one-half unemployed, I accepted a contract position at Capital One Bank in Plano. I am working as a Project Manager for Home Loans, Home Equity, Loan Originations, and Mortgage Loans. I enjoy the people, work, and location. The only down side is the resource market is full, so the contract per hour is low. It is now 11/02/12 and the last day of my contract at Capital One's Plano Campus. I have stayed there 20 months and will miss my colleagues, especially my managers (Harry & Beverly). I have not experienced this much fun at a company since First United in Ft Worth (early '80's). Military I never joined, but I respect and support our troops. I have applied several times for an IT position in Iraq and Kuwait in support of the troops. Nothing Yet!!! My Nephew Clinton Young died recently. Clinton finished military police boot camp before being killed at 18 1/2 during the Christmas/New Year’s holidays of 2010. He would be a fine decent man today. Go Army....
