Wendy's Story
Life
My family moved from Bethelem, PA to Grosse Pointe Farms in 1969. Missed my pals in PA but loved growing up in GPF. Went to Grosse Pointe South where I met my best friends who are still in my life today and graduated in 1978. I went to college at Western Mich. University from 1978-82.
Moved to Washington DC in Aug, 1986 and stayed. Love it here. Met my husband, Mark, married in 1989. We are now in Silver Spring, MD. Have 2 great daughters, Aimee (15) and Sara (11) .
I have been working as a Travel Consultant since '84. I worked for Carlson Wagonlit Travel and had been at this office for 16 yrs, working from home, before I was laid off end of Feb. I am working on my resume and hope to start working again in Sept. I would like to see if we can make it thru the summer so I can spend time with my kids.
My husband works for NEMA-Natl Engineering Manufacturer's Assn.
Summer is almost over and there are about 3 weeks til school starts up again. I've interviewd for 2 jobs; didn't get the 1st and waiting to hear on the 2nd. I have applied to others which I am still hoping to hear back from as they are more what I want to do. I am applying for Travel Coordinator position w/in priv firms, pay would be higher than working in a travel agency. This has been a lot more difficult than I ever imagined. I thought I would hve a job by now. Keeping my fingers crossed.
School
If I could do anything over again it would be not to quit band in the 10th grade and finish out high school ...Expand for more
playing in band or wind emsemble. I still play the flute, most recently in our church wind emsemble, but I feel that my pride got in my way -I missed being in Wind Ensemble by one chair which meant I was first chair in band but that wasn't good enough for me so I quit at end of 10th grade. Bad decision. Other than that I guess I would say I would do HS exactly the same but not be quite as shy.
I had a blast, I had a bunch of great girlfriends, still do, and a great gang of guys and girls to hang out with. We did some silly thing, some stupid things (Chinese firedrills) but that is what you do. I loved going to the football and basketball games, Pompom parties, loved being part of the badminton team (my husband teases me about that). It was fun cruising on Friday nights and hanging out at Burger Chef (tame Grosse Pointe, what else was there)- afterall, seems like everyone showed up there sooner or later.
Summers were the best, taking bike rides, hanging at the Farms pier, spending all day there with my friends, taking walks on the pier and to the high dock, just talking about things. Mostly about guys, college, the future. Everything was so carefree. Mindy, Liz, Jane, Sue and I loved it there. Those times are some of my most cherished memories.
Every time I visit GP Mindy and I take our long walks looking at the homes and checking for sale signs. The fantasy doesn't last long once I get home and get back into my life in Silver Spring with my friends. But, I still do love GP.
