Wendy's Story

2016- I occupy my time with my oil paints, and exercise on my rowing machine. I've dealt with some health issues for 6 years but doing well regardless. I've kept myself busy previously raising my kids, but long since grown. I enjoy spending time with my Granddaughter who turns 10 in June. I still live in the Lower Mainland, but planning in the next 5 years or so to move to the Fraser Valley, or elsewhere. I've changed a lot over the years..( April 2017,) --->. I starting getting into Genealogy quite a number of years ago. My Dad gave me a gem that involved a newspaper piece that was dated 1929. The title got my attention "Making pumps at Komoka for about 70 years-Charles N.D. Tilden, In 94th Year, Tells of Early Manufacturing, Contends Wooden Pump Better Than Metal One-Recalls Father Having Aided Rebel Leader to Escape at Detroit.". Charles N. D. Tilden was my Great Great Grandfather born in Ingersoll, Ontario in 1835. He was named after Dr. Charles Dumcombe one of the leaders of the Canadian Rebellion of 1837. His father Charles Goodrich Tilden (born in 1807, Compton Quebec) drove Dr. Duncombe in a cutter from London, Ontario to Detroit, Michigan. Dr. Duncombe was dressed as my 3x Great Grandfather's Aunt, going through checkpoints in areas of Southwest Ontario unnoticed. They stopped and stayed overnight at an inn to rest, and Grandpa went down to the tavern paying for rounds of drinks to the soldiers there. The next day they moved to go across the frozen water to Michigan with the aid of one of the soldiers who recognized Grandpa from the night before. Dr. Duncombe got across into Michigan safely and furthe...Expand for more
r lived his life in California. It got found out later that Charles Goodrich Tilden was involved in the escape and was later jailed in London Ontario. He contracted jail fever (typhus) because of the poor conditions. His wife pleaded the jailers to release him due to the fact that he was dying, and they did. Charles Goodrich Tilden lived a long life afterwards. His son Charles N. D. Tilden inherited a piece of land previously owned by Dr. Charles Duncombe as payment for Charles' father helping him escape the Rebellion. Charles Goodrich Tilden's father Stephen Tilden (my 4x Great Grandfather) served in the American Revolution 0f 1776 as a Patriot, was in Valley Forge and the Battle of Monmouth, and served for three years before moving to Quebec. This interesting story has connected me with a lot of distant cousins. I have to say it was a lot of fun making discoveries along the way. I keep building on my family tree every year. Just recently over the year have involved in a volunteer project for familysearch.org indexing for their online database recording more than 7,000 names. I represent 24 generations of Tildens, and am also a Mayflower descendant. March 2020-- Update: I have started a new chapter in my life. I have moved away from the Lower Mainland December 2019 to the Kootenays. Now am living in Rossland. Trying to get used to the weather and culture of a small town. Still unpacking and getting settled. I do get out and shovel snow at times but also hire my neighbour that has a bobcat. Can't wait to start oil painting and getting involved in the community. Gotta say it was quite the adventure getting here.
