William (Bill)'s Story

I actually wrote this for Facebook, but thought it would catch people up on my life. 1. I hate writing! Not so much the brainstorming for ideas or the putting feelings into words, just the actual act of writing! I have 3 college degrees, working on a fourth and writing has never been my strong suit (you know all those darn punctuations and stuff). So, I am doing this because I feel that I need to return something to all of those who have blessed me with their writing! 2. Even though it is hard for me to admit, I am a bit OCD. If you¿re not sure what OCD is, it means that ¿well, look it up online at en.wikipedia.org. 3. I am probably the last person in the world that most of my friends from High School and College would ever guess to be an elementary teacher or principal. I worked in public education for the last 16 years, 3 years working for SOSU as an outreach counselor in McCurtain County OK, 6 years as a 3rd and 4th grade teacher in Sherman, TX and the last 7 years as an elementary principal in a small rural school in SE Oklahoma. 4. Much to the chagrin of 3 out of 4 of my high school counselors I actually went to college, and am still going. Much thanks is owed to my two wonderful parents who have backed me through all of my decisions throughout my life, and my oh so special bride who has been with me for the last 13 years, throughout my M.Ed., and my work on my Ph.D. 5. Even though I don¿t tell them often enough, my family is the most important thing in the world to me¿I am truly blessed to still have my mother and father, Martha & Bill; my sister Scharlyn, who has finally gone back to college after 15 years or so of raising a family and working full-time at the same time (I don¿t want to steal her thunder, so check our her page here on facebook); my wife Brenda, who the Lord has truly blessed me with, two wonderful step-sons Stewart and Clinton that I couldn¿t be more proud of; a daughter-in-law Sarah, and two wonderful grandchildren Kane Bryan, and Kira Janelle. I also have many wonderful aunts, uncles, cousins, and in-laws who are always in my heart and prayers. 6. Six years ago or so, the Lord blessed Brenda and me by allowing us to open our first used bookstore, Blue River Books, which is in Durant, OK. Since starting our little store 6 years ago we were once more blessed when 1-½ years ago we purchased a historical building in downtown Durant, moved our bookstore into the bottom of the building and our home into the upper loft of the building. Then in April of 2008, we purchased our second used bookstore, The Book Rack, which is in Sherman, TX. 7. My outdoor hobbies include bird hunting, and fishing, neither which I do enough of, but someday when I retire¿. I don¿t know which is more exciting hearing and ¿feeling¿ the rush of a Pheasant or Quail flushing up underneath you or watching a bobber slam down under the wa...Expand for more
ves. 8. Indoor hobbies ¿ you guessed it, reading, games, and movies. We also catch ourselves collecting everything from books & coins to Barbie¿s and guns. I also enjoy working with wood, and hope to someday have more time to pursue that hobby. 9. I have mentioned ¿blessings¿ throughout my writing, so just in case you have not caught on, I am a firm believer in my and hopefully your savoir Jesus Christ. Heard a new term I truly like ¿Christ Follower¿. I count myself as one. 10. Have I mentioned I don¿t like writing! I am not even halfway through, and am running out of things to say ¿ I live a truly boring life. 11. I am an ¿Air Force Brat¿. I was born in West Germany (that alone tells you I am old), and we got to live in Texas, Colorado, Turkey, traveled in Greece, and came back to the N. Texas, SE Oklahoma area where I now live. 12. I discovered late in life that I enjoy singing; I have been the song leader at Albany Baptist Church for around 9 years. 13. I also discovered that I enjoy the arts; I like to work with clay, and also enjoy watercolors and someday want to delve into using oils. 14. I am a procrastinator and a bit messy also. Just don¿t move my piles. 15. Even though I enjoy the use of technology, I truly believe our world would be better off without everyone keeping a cell or blue-tooth device to their ear. 16. I hope to finish my Ph.D. in the next 3 - 5 years, if not sooner! 17. I am still struggling with a dissertation topic. I seem to be lead more and more to something dealing with ¿Spiritual Leadership¿. The Lord is really working on me and my life, and I am not really sure where I am headed. 18. I am Diabetic; the Doctor keeps after me about my weight, and tells me if I will get down to 195 or so I can kick most of my meds. So whets the problem you might ask, I love to eat, and either don¿t like exercising, or just can¿t seem to find the time. 19. I do miss my high school friends and try to somewhat keep up with them. I also miss the friends I made in college while in band or participating in fraternities or while working as a Dorm RA. It seems life deals us all different hands and we all get so caught up in our own lives we often don¿t take time to write or call just to say hi or simply remind someone that they are special or hold a special place within you heart. 20. I enjoy hunting for rocks, crystals, and fossils. 21. I love to travel anywhere, anytime! 22. I want to see the middle east again and take Brenda on a tour from Greece through Turkey and on to Jordan and Egypt to see the Great Pyrimids. 23. I hope to someday be a Superintendent of Schools somewhere where the Lord needs me. 24. I would like to build a house here in the Durant area, where, I just found out my great-grandfathers family originally settled in Durant, Oklahoma. 25. I really don¿t like writing, can you tell?
