William (Bill)'s Story

Started school at St. Peter's Roman Catholic School on S. 5th St. from 1st to 6th grade (would have graduated Holy Name in 67 -( I know many of the '67 Holy Name & Central Catholic Grads such as Tony Dianna, Bobby Flowers, Tim Antosy, Anne Stover, Bev Wirth and many others). Attended Lauer's Park Elementary and Chas. S Foos for a few months in Grade 6 then on to NW Junior High 7 thru 10. Spent a lot of time at RHS hanging out with Craig & Jeff Miller, Steve Heller, Jane Morganstern etc. and mostly students from NW & NE Jr. High Schools. Weekends were spent driving around in my MGA and later my TR3 running Road Rallies etc. Took Rosalee Markle to the Prom which I considered a major accomplishment in getting her to like me since she knew me from my angry guy phase in Jr. High. Worked at Pomeroys Shoe Dept. after school and weekends and also P/T at "The Book Mart" 6th & Court. After graduating RHS, I enlisted in the US Navy, married Jeanne Heck (class of '66) and had a son, Todd. My son owns a home in Wyomissing which he shares with his lovely wife, Lisa. No grandkids. UPDATE: Todd moved to NYC and now rents out the Wyomissing house. Still no grandkids, I pretty sure that ship has sailed. After the Navy, I moved around SE Pennsylvania towns, (Lancaster, Ephrata, York and Chambersburg) managing shoe stores. I was the manager of Royce Shoes, 522 Penn St.. in the early to mid 70's. Also managed a FinanceAmerica Loan Office in Reading located in the Abraham Lincoln Hotel bldg. before relocating to Phoenix, Arizona in 1978. Realizing where the real money was, I quickly entered the real estate business and prospered. Got married again and divorced. My home was in Far North Scottsdale. Recently sold it and am having a new one built in the far NW valley desert area of Surprise AZ. close to Lake Pleasant and surrounding mountains. UPDATE: August - New Home is finally finished. We moved in a few weeks ago, now come the shutters, water systems, garage floor coatings etc. and the big one -an inground play pool and landscaping. Once accomplished I have visions of chilling out and enjoying my retirement but still intend to work P/T just to keep busy and not get fat and lazy. UPDATE: Now have a P/T job driving adults ( 19 to 70+ ) with intellectual disabilities to a comprehensive 5 day per week program where they learn life skills to help them realize their dreams of independence, employment and social relationships through t...Expand for more
raining in arts, music, education, culinary/catering training, dance and fitness programs. Update: Just started a parttime job as an Event Staff member at State Farm Stadium where the AZ. Cardinals Football Team plays their games. In addition to the games I also work concerts, auto shows and the like. I'll be working the Super Bowl this February 2023. Too many people retire, do nothing, and die. Me, I like to keep busy. I was the Designated Broker of a national property management company and also manage several HOA associations in North Scottsdale including Troon. Now retired and drive a school bus to keep me busy. I look back fondly growing up in the city and attending Reading High School and relish my carefree summers spent in Ocean City MD. and the Jersey Shore. Not the best student by any means, frankly I was bored most of the time especially with English, Biology and Chemistry but did very well in Math and excelled in Civics, History and Music. I did enjoy my time at Rearing Area Community College a few years later and did very well in my studies. I met one of my early loves at R.A.C.C. -Linda Meck - We were together several years and almost got married. I have nothing but fond memories about her and think of her often. Met Jackie online in 2012. and we were married in 2013 on a trip to Las Vegas. We tied the knot at the "World Famous" Little White Wedding Chapel on Las Vegas Blvd. after they sent a Limmo to pick us up at The Mirage. Honeymooned in Vegas seeing several shows including "Jersey Boys" and "Beatles Love". Gambled a bit and broke even. Had a great time and we're still married. I'm still interested in history and I'm active in politics. I'm an active collector of the Reading historical book series titled "The Passing Scene" by George & Gloria Meiser. I've connected with a few classmates from RHS, Central Catholic and Holy Name and like catching up and finding out how their lives turned out. I was blessed with strength, but not any more and a sound mind but have been "slipping" a little but still plan on being around for another decade or two. Nevertheless, I've made the decision to be interned at Leesport Cemetery off Shackamaxon Street, high on a hill, overlooking the City of Reading, which after all these years is still where my heart is. I have just been diagnosed with liver disease and need a transplant. Working with Mayo Clinic trying to get accepted, if not I'll die within the year.
