William's Story

A very exciting life. After high school, went to New York to study music where I fell in love with a fabulous pianist who helped me define my political outlook based strongly on the philosophy of Ayn Rand that I carried with my throughout my life. I learned the hard way not to apply Rand's philosophy to a personal relationship - there are a lot of feelings and interactions that cannot be rationalized. But reading Ayn Rand opened a world to great philosophers and economists such as Hayak, Friedman, and Burke. This wonderful person and I shared many hair-raising adventures, and after traveling together through Europe and the Middle East, we wound up in Israel where I finished my BA (liberal arts). Some years later, I was able to complete my MA in Liberal Arts and had the opportunity to become a senior executive fellow at the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard. After college, we returned to the States but then both returned to Israel (separately this time). In Israel, I eventually married Regina, an artist who had recently defected from the Soviet Union, and she and I have been together over 36 years. Regina and I moved first to Ireland, where I tried (unsuccessfully) to open a vitamin manufacturing business, and then came back to the States, where I pursued an intense and facinating career in the Dept of the Navy that provided many challenging assignments and the opportunity to t...Expand for more
ravel the world - visiting many wonderful places, and sometimes some nasty places, and in a small way, was part of the effort that eventually defeated the Evil Empire. Through the Navy, we were able to live many years in Spain and in Italy, and one of my many assignments was with the UN Dept of Peacekeeping Operations in New York during the aftermath of the Somalia disaster. My wife was always behind the scenes giving me moral support and gave me three wonderful children. After retiring from the Dept of the Navy, the Library of Congress invited me to build a new organization for them, and after that assignment, ran for public office twice, and now run a government consulting firm, direct a not-for-profit research organization and am active politically and culturally in the community which all give me the opportunity to try to help make the world a better place. Life always presents its triumphs and hardships. I feel blessed to have experienced the things I did at the times I experienced them - good things and bad things - worked hard to overcome and live through difficult times and celebrate the triumphs of good times. And I believe I gave to my children a sense of compassion, which is such an important trait. I am also grateful to all the fantastic people I have met through life and expect to continue to meet in the future and hope that I can have a positive influence on people.
