William's Story

. College Montgomery Community College, Troy, N.C Two year AAS degree course in Gunsmithing. Graduated May 2008 with a 4.0 GPA and now work for L3 Communications at Camp Lejeune NC. Military Military History: Joined USMC delayed entry program 6 Oct 1975 Enter active duty 6 Jan 1976 and assigned to Platoon 207, 2nd Recruit Training Battalion, Parris Island SC. Upon graduation from boot camp, in March 1976, I was Meritoriously Promoted to PFC as one of the top 10% of recruits. I then reported to 29 Palms Ca., C&E School in Apr 1976 and I was promoted to L/Cpl on 1 Nov 1976. After Graduation from C&E Schools I was assigned the MOS of 2841, or Ground Radio Repairman, and received orders to report for duty to 1st Track Veh. Bn 3rd Marine Division Okinawa Japan in May 1977. While there I was Promoted to Cpl on 1 Nov 1977 and Deployed with BLT 1/9 in Jan 1978. After that I received orders and reported to 1st FSSG Camp Pendleton Ca in May 1978 and assigned to Communications Platoon, H&S Co, 7th Eng Supt Bn. In Aug 1979 I was Promoted to Sgt. and then reenlisted in Nov 1979. After that I received orders and reported to I&I Staff, B Co (-) 4th Track Veh Bn, Jacksonville Fl. in July 1980 where I trained Marine Reserve Radio Operators and Radio Technicians on the operations and maintenance of communications equipment associated with the LVT-P7, C7, and R7 along with all other ground telephone and radio equipment assigned to the unit. I was Promoted to SSgt in Aug 1982 and received orders to reported to C&E Schools 29 Palms Ca for Radio Technician Course (2861) in Jul 1983. I Graduated 4th in my class May 1984. After graduating I received orders and reported to MCLB Albany Ga, in May 1984 where I performed Depot Level Maintenance and rebuilt HF and VHF radios to like new standards. I also attended the SNCO Career Course Jan-Mar 1985. Upon returning I received orders to and reported to MACS 4, MACG 38, MCAS, Futema Okinawa Japan, Jun 1985. After a year there I received Orders to and reported to MWSS-273, 1st MAW, MCAS, Beufort SC Jul 1986. While there I was asked to represent the Squadron at the 1987 Cherry Point 1st Marine Air Wing Rifle and Pistol Intramural Championship. ng. I competed and won the "Over All Champion" with the highest combined score of Rifle and Pistol placing 3rd with the Rifle and 4th with the Pistol. In the Spring of 1988 I competed in and won the MCAS Beufort Intramural Pistol Championship. In the 1988 Cherry Point 1st MAW Rifle and Pistol Intramural Championship I was the Over All Champion for the second time placing 1st with both the Rifle and Pistol. After that I was assigned to 8th Comm BN Camp Lejeune from Jul 1989 until March 1993 where I served in the Gulf War. That was a real fast time in my live. After returning from the Gulf War I came back to Camp Lejeune and later received orders to Okinawa Japan for the third time. My wife and I spent one year over there and then we returned to Camp Lejeune NC and was assigned to Comm Co. 2nd Mar Div. That was a good tour. I made MSgt while there and then was reassigned to Comm Squadron 28 Cherry Point NC. While there I took up shooting again. The Marine Corps Shooting Team took notice and sent me orders to report to the Marine Corps Shooting Team. I had many billets while on the Marine Corps Shooting Team to include SNCOIC of Teams, SNCOIC of the Rifle Team, OIC of the Rifle Team for a short time, and various other billets. I shot on National Record Setting Teams, I coached National Winning Teams, I trained many Marines and civilians to shoot competitively, and I placed each year I was there at the Eastern Division Championship. In 2000 I won the Eastern Division Rifle Championship. That year I was promoted to MGySgt. In May 2001 I received orders to Okinawa Japan again. That Sept the World Trade Center was hit and the world changed forever. We expected my order to change but they did not and I reported to MCB G6 in Dec 2001. We supported the war with men and equipment from Okinawa. While at G6 I started up the Base Rifle and Pistol team again. We won the Far East Division Rifle Team Championship in 2003. In Jul I came back to the states and was assigned to 8th Comm Bn but this time as the Maintenance Chief. While there I trained Marine for deployment to Iraq and ran the Communication Maintenance Shop for the Battalion. I retired on 1 Feb and received the Meritorious Service Medal for my actions.
