William's Story
After graduating from Salvatorian Seminary in 1967, I attended St. Ambrose College, continuing in the seminary for the Peoria Diocese. I graduated in 1971 with a BA in Philosophy. I left the seminary and married a good friend, Diann, and we have now been married for 44 years. We have four children and 14 grandchildren.
I reluctantly joined the Navy to avoid the draft in late 1971, and wound up serving 22 years on active duty. I served initially as a Hebrew linguist on the island of Cyprus. After being commissioned as an officer in 1974, I served in a variety of locations around the world, ashore and afloat. After training in Russian, I made a number of submarine patrols to the North Atlantic, plus serve in the Persian Gulf, Indian Ocean, Guam, Hawaii, Maine, California, Texas and our last assignment in command of a base on Okinawa, Japan. I retired as a Commander in 1993.
I stayed active in academics and in ministry throughout that time. I have an MA in ...Expand for more
Education, another MA in Pastoral Theology, and the Ph.D. in Theology from Catholic University of America in Washington, DC. In most places we lived in over the years, we would be active in the local parish and community, and in 1990 I was ordained a deacon for the Archdiocese of Washington, DC., while still on active duty in the Navy. After the Navy, I have worked in several dioceses as Director of Pastoral Services and as Director of the Diaconate; from 2002-2008 I was on the senior staff at the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, running both the diaconate office and the evangelization office. Since then, I've been in academic work at Saint Leo University in Florida and now Santa Clara University in California, where another SS alumnus, Gary Macy (1968) is also teaching! It's been fun to get back together with Gary and tell stories from high school!
All in all, it's been an exciting time so far and I'm looking forward to more in the future!
