William's Story
Life
Born on a farm near Centerburg, Ohio on 30 December 1935 to Phyllis Houchin Dupee (18 years old) and Dean E. Dupee (19 years old). It turned out to be a wonderful life for me mostly because of the love of these two young parents and with a lot of love from grandparents, aunts and uncles. Every kid should have a life as blessed and happy as mine has been. I am the first of five children born to Dean and Phyllis, but, of course, their parents were not as young as mine when they were born. Norma Jean was born in July 1938, Robert Alan (little Bobby) was born in September 1943, James Russell (Jimmy) was born in June 1952 and Thomas Mark (Tommy) was born in April 1954.
Started to school in September 1941 at the Fredericktown, Ohio school and progressed as far as the 7th grade there until our family moved to Greenwich, Ohio. Finished high school in May 1954 at Greenwich High School.
Entered Ohio University at Athens, Ohio in September 1954 and in January 1959 graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil Engineering.
Was employed as a Junior Engineer for the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad Company in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania until April 1959 when I entered the United States Air Force to serve my duty to my country for three years as a Reserve Officer. After being extended in my active duty committment due to the Cuban Missile Crisis, I decided to accept a commission in the Regular Air Force and remained on active duty until October 1979.
I Married the lovely Arlene Wolford on New Year's Day 1961. She was a Fredericktown girl that I met well after our family moved away from there. Arlene and I had three children: Christopher, Curtis and Stephanie. This marriage ended in the (Panama) Canal Zone 1974 and I became a bachelor dad. In June 1976 I transferred to Luke Air Force Base near Phoenix, Arizona...Expand for more
. I knew then that Arizona would be my home for the rest of my life. The Desert Southwest was made for people like me. I love it here.
In October 1978, I remained a Dad, but I turned in my bachelorhood when I married the most precious and lovely Suzanne Harty (nee, Davis) originally from Worthington, Ohio. She is the love of my life and represents another of my many life blessings. After my Air Force retirement, Sue and I and my (our) three young people ("children" no longer applied to them)moved to Southern Arizona where Sue and I remain to this day. We live in the Desert near Benson, Arizona. Sue was an officer in the First Interstate Bank system from 1973 until she retired in 1987. She now is totally busy doing volunteer work as a Victim Advocate in both Pima and Cochise Counties. I worked in the Civil Engineer Squadron at Davis-Monthan AFB from July 1981 until I retired from gainful employment in January 2004.
Christopher is the father of four young people most of whom are grown and on their own. Chris lives in Farmer City, Illinois. Curtis lives near Sue and me and he is the founder and owner of the Arizona Engineering and Manufacturing Company, Inc. (AZEM) an advanced machine shop. In 2006, Curt sold the shop to Suzanne. Curt and his lovely wife, Rhonda, are now the owners and operators of the Mescal Outdoor Power Center located on the lot just North of the AZEM and Suzanne is the owner and CEO of AZEM.
Stephanie was taken from us tragically in August 1995. She had recently celebrated her 25th birthday. So, in spite of the many blessings I have enjoyed all of my life, the tragedy of losing Stephanie keeps me in "the real world." Because I lost her, I am better equipped to determine what is really important and what the genuine priorities are as I finish these last few years of my life.
