William's Story

Where to start... Life has been good but I'm glad that it's starting to wind down. There have been high points - The friends I've made along the way, getting married, the birth of my daughters (and now grand daughter) and the relationships I've had. The low points - Divorce, the lost of my grandmother (father's side), grandfather (mother's side) and my mother in the same year - but in the end, I can't complain. "Been there, done that" has been more of a lifestyle with me than a bad quote. High school, College, The Army and now Marquette are truly the life experiences that have made me who I am today. I've had the opportunity to travel and truly get to see the world that we live in. It's been a great experience getting re-acquainted with old friends weather you were in the group I hung out with, friends of the family or just someone I'd say high to in class or at a group event. At the time, even though all we did was sit around and plan our futures, we never thought that we'd grow apart like we have. We spent all four years of high school counting the days until graduation and the rest of our lives wishing it lasted longer. I remember hating school breaks because all my friends were gone during that time. I was so glad when classes started up again. As for my life story¿ After high school I worked at Safeway for another year before I was accepted to DeVry Institute of Technology in Kansas City, MO. were I hung in there and received my Associates Degree in Business Management and my B.S. in Electronics Engineering. I then worked for Dell strait out of school, right at the time they were starting to grow but no sooner did I start there, they had cut backs and I was laid off. Nobody else wanted to give me a chance because of my inexperience. Even though I had plenty of knowledge. I then turned my attention to the US Army and the new technology that they were getting ready to deploy. So, I became a Patriot Missile Operator / Maintainer. Not only did I get to work on a multi-billion dollar high tech system but I also got to drive monster looking trucks, fire missiles, blow up things and play with machine guns. Every young guys dream come true. During my stay in the Army, I was stationed at Fort Bliss, TX. - Kaiserslautern, Germany - Haifa, Israel - Riyadh, Saudi Arabia - Dhahran, Saudi Arabia and Suwon Air force Base, South Korea. I participated in the Gulf War and about five other campaigns in the region. I was in Haifa, Israel during the beginning of the war protecting the Israelis from the threat of scud attacks. We stayed there for almost three months before going back to Germany. Then, it was back to the states in the last part of 1993. The unit I went to was getting ready to start a rotation back to the Persian Gulf area to operate and maintain the Patriot Missile Systems that...Expand for more
Saudi Arabia had purchased until they could have there people trained and proficient enough to operate there equipment by themselves. During that time, I got engaged to a friend of my sisters and then married when I got back to the states. She had two young boys from a previous marriage whom I later adopted as my own and we had two daughters together. The Army was a great life experience and I would of stayed in longer but after the Gulf War, the Patriot Missile System became so popular, that every country with the threat of a scud attack, wanted us there, which kept me away from my family and deployed to all the corners of the earth. So, I made the hard choice to get out. I was lucky to find the job at Ensign-Bickford (now Dyno Nobel). A great paying job, nice people to work with and good hours - but in the end, mergers are only good for the companies, not the employees. So I got let go (down sizing, cut backs). During my time at Ensign-Bickford, my wife realized that she didn¿t like me that much anymore. We had the perfect relationship while I was deployed all over the world, which was about 94% of the time that we were married. Now she had to actually live with me and that was the problem I guess. Shortly after that, she found her someone better to be with on the internet and it was back to the single life for me. I then started a Satellite and Home Theater installation company called Tech Installs LLC. It had grown to be a pretty good size company but like most good things, it to came to an end when gas prices hit $ 4.00 a gallon and I was paying more to complete an installation then I got paid for one. Now, I work as an engineer on a towboat. It¿s one of those jobs that¿s been around for years¿I just wish I knew about it sooner. This is the most relaxing job I¿ve ever had. Even at it¿s most intense moments, I wouldn¿t trade it for anything. We work on the lower Mississippi river moving loaded or empty barges up to St. Louis, MO. And then loaded barges back down to New Orleans, LA. You talk about an office with a view¿WOW! I do believe I¿ll enjoy growing old doing this job. Now, that¿s what I¿ve been up to all these years. I hope it didn¿t bore you with too much details. I¿ve also been uploading pictures when I get a chance of the places I¿ve been, things I¿ve seen and of friends and family. So, if you got the time, check them out. It¿s been really great hearing from you all - old acquaintances, old friends and the new friends I¿ve been making. Don¿t stop now¿keep those letters coming and let me know how life has been treating you. Well, that's my life in a nut shell. Whenever your bored - just drop me a note...and this time...no teachers can make you read it out loud if front of the WHOLE class (Thanks you Miss Newberry). Love Ya All Lots, William
