William's Story

It's difficult to write this without it sounding maudlin or depressing, because it isn't. Life, however, gets in the way. I hope people remember me for the person I think I was. That is, quiet, kind, strong, stable, and considerate. I know in my own mind I tend to over-exaggerate things so perhaps others know me quite differently. My life through high school was shaped by my experiences of hard work, goal-setting, and achievement to get to that place we all think we have to get to. I can thank Mr. Richard Magde, Metal Shop teacher at Bay Trail for instilling in me a work ethic that even today permeates my soul. Yeah, he worked me hard for $1.75 per hour. n. While the pain of losing both grandparents to my daughters went away, raising them and dealing with life kept me busy. In my 40's I dealt with job changes, layoffs, RIFs, death, and divorce. I turned my focus to being part of my daughter's lives as much as possible, and basically just surviving. Times were tough, relationships difficult, and family ties strained. Each of my life experiences are like the northern star, guiding me to a place where everything is coming together in a way that it all makes sense. My happiness has never been greater. I'm in a relationship that I've waited for my entire life. My job is fulfilling and exciting. My life is consumed with worthwhile activities, great friends and extended family, and I can look backward to the stepping stones that have brought me here. I wouldn't change a thing, nor could I. Its the realization that this is the life we've been dealt that makes it all palatable, tolerable, and acceptable. While life really does get in the way, everything happens for a reason. Deal with it.
