William's Story

I would like to share an IM conversation I had with my daughter today. Please forgive the minimal obsenities I used when mentioning Brenda Spenser, I'm sure I will be forgiven. This is the first time since 1979 I have wrote this down. To set this up there was a school shooting in Germany today near where my daughter lives. I did not know exactly where she went to school and the town where it happend was a possibility. Of course I was terrified until I was able to contact her and no she doesn't attend that school. Last year my son's school in Germany had a shooting where a student took out his teacher, and yes he was there. It would seem that fate likes to torture me with school shootings. Well of course this brought up all the memories of that infamous day at Cleveland in 1979. Bill: Did you happen to notice where the last school shooting in Germany was? : No Bill: COBURG Bill: Christian's school Bill: he was there : ... in 2002? Bill: no 2008. student shot teacher : Really? Oh. 2002 was the biggest shooting. : My friend despina had a friend and a little sister in the school that the shooting was at. I think her friend was shot, but he's alive. And her sister is fine. Bill: It's just too eerie for me. Me and Uncle Dan we present for the first famous school shooting and now they just keep haunting me. Christian last year and this one was too close for comfort : It is pretty eerie. I think it's mostly just a coincidence, though. Bill: yes Bill: me Bill: too Bill: Google Brenda Spencer Bill: used a .22 cal rifle, 2 dead, 11 injured, The dead are Mr. Wragg and Mike the janitor. I remember all of that always but I can't tell you the year : 1979 Bill: I¿m looking at it now, aunt patty knew her from school : Who gives their daughter a gun for their 16th birthday. Bill: lots of people Bill: I don't have a problem with that Bill: but you don't give a whack job a gun Bill: she's eligible for parole again this year Bill: I'd like to attend her parole hearing : That would be interesting. Bill: it would because the families of the deceased and injured will probably be there : Did you know anyone that was killed? Bill: 2, the principal and custodian (janitor) : Oh yeah, I mean, personally. : anyone who was shot? Bill: Principal Wragg visited Uncle Dan in the hospital when he ruptured his kidney, just a couple of months before it happened : D: : I have a friend in Colorado, whose math teacher was in the columbine shooting. Bill: (link deleted) Bill: read (the link) Bill: I was one of those 6th graders guarding the doors, I was the 2nd biggest kid in School so... : Really? Bill: yep Bill: He talks about the principal falling, Uncle Dan must have been standing next to this kid and I saw it from the Office door about 10 feet away : That's so terrifying. Bill: I remember it all like it was yesterday : Tell me all about it. I want to hear your story. If you're fine with it. Bill: I'm definitely fine with it, but it's a long story. Bill: I never remember dates But I remember it was Monday because Brenda Spence was later quoted that one of the reasons she did it was "I don't like Mondays" : By the way, while you're writing. You should download the e-book, "To Give A Boy A Gun" it's basically a First person (I think it was 1st...) point of view of a kid who wants to do a school shooting. It was a pretty good book. Bill: Like the kid in the story you just read me and Danny, he was a 4th grader at the time, got to school early. Oma dropped us off on her way to work. It was pretty darn cold this morning, by San Diego standards anyway, so me and my friend decided to sneak into the office to warm up (I don't remember his name). : Yeah Bill: We weren¿t in there very long when we heard what we thought was a cap gun going off, this is where time begins to stop. the following series of events happened pretty quickly but I now kind of remember it in slow motion. Bill: We could hear a little ruckus outside the office, obviously in response to someone bringing ...Expand for more
a cap gun to school, so I poked my head out the office door to take a look (my head sticking out the door must have looked like a target at the fair to Brenda). What I saw didn't register in my brain yet (in fact it didn't really register till the next day) was Principal Burton Wragg falling from the shot that killed him, I think it was the heart. Uncle Dan was standing right behind him. Here is the fortunate part, he was out there to open the gate to let everyone into the school, had the gate not been open all the kids huddled at the gate would have been sitting ducks with nowhere to run. Bill: I feel some dirt fall on my head and I close the door still clueless to what is really going on. : D: Creepy Bill: Next my teacher barges into the office with a girl in his arms. He yells at the secretary to "Call the police, someone is shooting at the school" and takes the girl back to the nurses office. I now am fully aware of what is going on, but the secretary hasn't registered yet. She looks at me and my friend and asks "What did Mr. Barnes say?" and we both start yelling at her to call the police. Bill: Mr. Barnes was the hero of the day, nobody will dispute this fact. Bill: Mr. Barnes is running all over the place grabbing up kids and getting them someplace safe, he was also the teacher that held Brenda Spence back a grade and her priority #1 target. : Whoa Bill: Eventually he gets the few of us in the office into the cafeteria/auditorium. He posts us 6th graders at the doors and then goes back out to save more people. Bill: It took the cops a long time to get to us, nobody knew where the shots were coming from. Every time we thought it was over we would hear a few more shots. : That's so terrifying : g Bill: We saw kids up on the playground and we yelled at them frantically to get down and run to the auditorium. One of them was one of the BIG kids in my class and I was happy we got him into the auditorium so he could help us hold the doors. : Yeah Bill: I was afraid, but amazingly, not terrified. I never lost it, I remained pretty cool almost cold throughout the ordeal. Eventually adults took over at the doors (can't remember if it was cops or teachers), probably 2 hours into it. : As the big kids we went around and tried to comfort the little ones, in the auditorium were a couple of the injured kids but none were bleeding a lot. raydar: That's good : The janitor was killed when he tried to go out and pull Mr. Wragg, still lying on the ground by the office, to safety. We all heard him moan when he got shot, he took it in the lungs. Bill: Mr. Barnes, target #1, pulls them both to safety but it was too late. HERO, no other word for the guy. Up until this day I hated Mr. Barnes, he was always riding me in class (of course I always deserved it). He will always be the greatest hero I have ever known Bill: So, eventually the PoPo secure an exit for us and evacuate the school. They took us to the Pershing JHS where all the parents came to pick us up. Bill: We didn't have a team of psychologists waiting for us, the school closed 1 day and we returned on Wednesday. : That's so mind blowing. : I'm tearing up right now, haha. It's people like Mr. Barnes and Mr. Wragg that make me not completely doubt the sanity of the world. Bill: On Wed. I got to school early and we were all talking about what happened on Monday as we were waiting for the gate to open. We were all looking for bullet holes in the building and of course we found some. Right next to the office door I spotted a hole, about a foot above where my head was poking out... Bill: It was then that I realized that that dirt that fell in my hair was actually the stucco from the building and that Brenda Spencer was about 12" away from taking my life. : Holy s#$%. Bill: (edit) tried to kill me. She can burn in Heck! Bill: the end Bill: hope you saved all of that because it is the first time I ever wrote it down, felt pretty good too. : She didn't even have a reason for it. Just for the lulz.
