William E. (Bill)'s Story
Life
After CHS, I earned a BS in Mechanical Engineering at Mississippi State, then entered the Army with a 2 year contract through the MSU ROTC program. Had such good assignments (actually used my degree while in uniform!), I stayed for an additional year and a half. After my time in uniform, I became a rocket scientist working for a defense contractor in San Diego. After 2 years of that, went to graduate school in NJ, then returned to MS and worked in the power industry. Five years later, went from making kilowatts to designing the facilities that generate them. The nuclear and conventional power industry was good to me, and I spent 30 years with the same company that specialized in designing generating and transmission facilities worldwide.I retired at age 60 as VP of Engineering, having led an organization with 1200 engineers, scientists, designers, technicians and support staff. I did some interesting things, designed/built plants all over the globe, met a lot of great people, made a lot of money and saw a lot of this planet.
Retiring at age 60 was the smartest thing I ever did, and I recommend it to everyone. I still do some occasional ...Expand for more
consulting, mostly to fix dysfunctional nuclear plants.
I chose early in life not to have children, as I believe there are already too many people on this planet. My late spouse Gloria agreed, so we enjoyed our animals. I live in rural PA, near the Amish part of the state (the Amish are a religious sect that are primarily farmers who avoid the use of electricity and mechanical devices, including cars.).
Until Gloria's passing in August of 2019, we traveled extensively, and even though I did a lot in my career, it is still my passion.
I am now living in an independent living over-55 community two miles from my former residence. I now have 200 neighbors, a nice gym and pool, good chef and lots of activities. My facility even has a bar! I love it.
Best to all!
