William's Story

Retired engineer with more than 30 papers, patents, and publications. A laparoscope manufactured for US Surgical, using my optical design, was selected as one of the year's 25 most innovative products by Photonics Spectra magazine in 1995. I retired a year later from the company manufacturing the scope and my previously untraded stock made me some money as the company soon got swallowed up by a company that then got swallowed up by another company which was involved in the fiber optics communications network buildout. My first journal article (co-author) was published in the Journal of the Optical Society of America about 1960 when I worked in optical design at Bausch & Lomb, where I was eventually Principal Research Scientist. (It was republished by the Society of Photo Instrumentation Engineers in their Milestone series around 1990.) While at B&L I wrote a computer program to automate much of the lens design proce...Expand for more
ss. Over the next few decades the number of optical designers declined dramatically. I also was involved with a project which was designed to determine if extremely high altitude imagery might be useful (before we ever launched a satelite). After Bausch & Lomb a more comprehensive program I wrote for IBM's newly released PC to automate much of the design of complex optical systems {known as GENII-PC) was an early member of the PC software million dollar club. (Shucks, I was just senior VP of development and a shareholder but the OTC stock paid off pretty well when I left.} Oh yea, between GENII PC and the laparoscope builder I was a consultant and helped lead development of a Korean/ Japanese/English word processor, then led engineering work on the development of photogrammetry products intended primarily for government use. I also wrote the chapter on automtic lens design for an Academic Press series of books on optics.
