William's Story
After high school at Memorial in Houston, I went to Clemson Uniiversity in South Carolina (with short stints at U of Houston in 1983 and 1984, while working at D Armstrong Office Supplies on the Katy Freeway) where l got a BS (‘85) and MS (‘88) in Physics.
On Halloween night 1987 under very weird circumstances l met and started dating a Canadian soil physicist, and in 1988 I moved in with her in the small textile mill town of Newry. (A fascinating place that had been cut in half when Lake Keowee - consult a map of South Carolina - was built. It had a post office, and an abandoned textile mill, school, and a church that someone had turned into a house. We lived in one half of an old mill worker’s house, heated by an oil furnace in the middle of the bedroom. Oh yeah, it was a trip.)
In 1989 we moved to Vegreville, Alberta, home of the world’s largest pysanka (look it up) where l stayed ...Expand for more
for 6 months and loved it, but we couldn’t agree to get married, so l left.. I then spent 25 years teaching Physics in South Carolina (Greenville Tech, USC-Spartanburg, South Carolina State University) and worked at the Idaho National Engineering Lab in ldaho Falls, another interesting place where l couldn’t stay because l couldn’t stand the job.
. I taught at Haywood Community College, Southwestern Community College, and Blue Ridge Community College in Western North Carolina. l tried my hand at call center work (it sucked) delivering newspapers (that did, too,) and writing for the Enterprise Mountaineer newspaper. After my mother died in 2010, I moved here to Asheville to work on my gender transition (I have done everything but “the surgery” - which l can’t afford - l have legally changed my name to Penelope B Stephens,) writing, and songwriting, and playing at local open mic nights.
