William's Story

ALONG THE WAY ALONG THE WAY......In June 1969 , i graduated from Anacostia HS. Unfortuately I'm not in the school year book with my picture or name, but you will find me in the track section with the 4x400 team. I don't know how that happen but I'm like the student that graduate but was never there at the same time. My graduation picture would have been the one i put in the "THEN" photo. A lot students don't know me; one reason is i didn't get to Anacostia until my Junior year. My father was military (ARMY), we was stationed at Hahn AFB,Germany. He deceided to retire in 1968 with 26 years under his belt. I was going to school in Wiesbaden, Germany at the time. We left Germany in February and i started school March 1968. I was only at the Anacostia a year and 3 months. The transition from a predominate white school (DOD schools) to a predominate black school was to say the least a big change for me. After graduating high school, I went to Washington Technical Institute (WTI) graduated 1971, with a AAS in Architectual Engineering. I went to Federal City College graduated 1974 with a BS in Urban Planning. Both schools joined with DCTeachers to what is now called University of District of Columbia (UDC). I didn't do much to improve myself the next couple of years. I worked with an A&E blueprinter company delivering arichitectual drawings to businesses in the Georgetown area. I did this for 2 two years (1974-76). In March 1976, I joined the USAF and went to Lackland AFB, TX (San ANTONIO) for basic training which was 6 week, I graduate from basis training as a Honor graduated, only six of us were selected in our flight. I left Lackland AFB and went to Tech School, Bioxli AFB, MS to learn my career field radio operations. My 1st active duty assignment, Travis AFB, CA. worked with 1901 Communication Squadron from June 1976 to Apr 1978. My next duty assignment, Naples, Italy, worked with NATO, from April 1978 to 1980. Next duty assignment, Westover AFB, MA, worked with Detachment 5, from April 1980 to October 1981. My next duty assignment, Andersen Afb, Guam worked with 2001st Communication Squadron from October 1981 to July1984 . Next duty assignment was Shaw AFB, SC, worked with 682nd Air Support Operations Center (ASOC), from July 1985 to Jul 1987. Next duty assignment, was Murted, Turkey, worked communication operations, from July 1987 to July 1988. Next duty assignment was Andrews AFB, MD worked with 2045th Communication Squadron (changed to 789th Communication Squadron), Presidential Radio Operations. from July 1988-March 2000. I retired from Andrews with 24 years service as a Master Sergeant in the USAF. ALONG THE WAY......I married my beautiful wife Beverly in 16 April 1980, whom i met at Travis AFB. I'm still married to the same woman. We been married 32 years. I LOVE HER MORE TODAY THEN I DID YESTERDAY AND EVEN MORE TOMORROW!!! ALONG THE WAY...... we raised two lovely children , it wasn't easy but we made it. After i retired, we settled down in San Antonio, Texas.. Our son, Justin graduated from UTEP in 2010. Our daughter, Talia graduated Cum Laude from Ronald Reagan HS attends Wiley College Aug 2012 with a partial academic & athletic scholarship. Our son didn't do any sports but loves John Madden football (PS3) & Call of Duty. He stays plenty busy working two jobs (ITT & computers) and fixing up his ride... 1995 Firebird. On the other hand our daughter did do sports. She ran track in HS (200, 400 &4x100 & 4x400 relays & high jump). She's doing fine..maintaining a 4.0 GPA , partying and chasing guy. I guess it comes with the territory...SMILE!! ALONG THE WAY...After retiring, i deceide to become MR MOM (Man ON a Mission). So, I stayed home . My reason was simple, I wanted my wife to get her college degree and retire from her federal job...Expand for more
. Nothing like a good plan, she received her BS from Texas State (July 2005) and plan on retiring from US Courts December 2012. She plans on doing her small business in embroidery work "Home Tweet Home". Its what she loves to do and she's been doing on the side for over 20 years. ALONG THE WAY... there is always some of the unexpected things in a person life. . In March 1999 i was diagnosised with Prostate Cancer before retiring. i had the surgery 04 Oct 1999. That was 13 yrs ago and i'm doing just fine. I'm not one of those guy's that falls in the category I don't-want to-talk about it. I do want to talk about it because i don't want the next guy to go through what i went through. If i can help and you want to talk contact me........... ALONG THE WAY..... As for me, i took it easy after the initial shock of the prostate cancer i look at life a little bit different, What good was it going to do me working myself to death and not enjoy just living. The movie the Family That Preys had an interesting question they asked. It was, "Are you living or just existing!". Most of us are so busy in own world just existing that we forget to live. By time we do want to live; its to late were going back and forth from the hospital trying to survvie. So I deceided to live. I starteed paicking where i wanted to work. I worked with the legal office on Lackland AFB on and off from 2001 to 2009. I worked doing income taxes for the military and at one time managed the Tax Center. In 2008, daughter started training and running with Randolph Roadrunners, AAU track and field club. Check out our website type in RANDOLPHROADRUNNERS.COM. I became a coach in 2009 and the rest is history. Just because i'm over-the-hill doesn't mean i can't move. I participate in the Senior Olympics in San Antonio every year. I run the following events (50m, 100m, 200m & 400m), when i'm not pulling muscles or gapping for air (smile). I run in the 60-64 year old category. I try to finish my events (smile). This is not just a city event it is nation wide. Each city has its Olympics the winners go on to the National held evey 2 year. If interested type in Senior Olympics on the Internet. ALONG THE WAY ....some the strangest things happen in your life you can't explain. My next door neighborhood out back when they 1st moved here. we went over to introduce ourselves and welcome them to the neighborhood. I found out he was USAF and retiring later on down the road. Okk i'm USAF too, no big deal. Next we found out his first name was Rodney and his wife name was Phyllis. Now your saying so, well my cousin and his wife had the same name too. Ok, still no big deal. Next we found out Rodney was from Washington DC, OK so I'm I. He lived in SE, so did i . Is getting stranger by the minute, oh it gets better. You know i went to Anacostia....who was our dreaded counterpart...you got it. He went to Eastern HS. My jaws almost hit the grounded. I had to draw a line in teh sand i knew the next question we're both from DC got to be Redskins Fan....Nope, i'm a Cowboy Fan.....now i know some of you are shaking your heads...but remember my father travel in th service never lived in DC until i got to Anacostia. We live in El Paso, Tx. So I've been a Cowboys fan when they 1st came into the league back in the 1960.....Sorrrrryyyyyy (smile)!!! ALONG THE WAY........My future, I guess I'm just going to have to wait before i put that down. I'm enjoying living right now. Even though I was only at ANACOSTIA for 1 year and 3 months. I wouldn't trade it for all the gold in the world. My parents use to say a school is only as good as the students who represent their school in society. No matter where i go or live THE BIG "A" ...ANACOSTIA HIGH will alway be a part of me . I will always represent my school with HONOR, PRIDE & DIGNITY.........GOOOOOOOOOOO INDIANNNNNNNNNSSSS!!!!
