William's Story

In February 1962 I graduated from RCC with a 2nd class RO ticket . I then worked for the Department of Transport (as they were called at that time) as an Aeradio/Marine operator . Worked briefly at Wiarton On. (on the Bruce peninsula ) , London On , Windsor , Gore Bay, and a sub-arctic station on Hudson Bay, Port Harrison PQ, (Now called Inukjuak ) (on the east and north east coast of Hudson Bay) and Great Whale River P.Q. about 400km south of Harrison (now called Boste De la Baleine ) . My tour of duty there was a year and a half . It was fairly isolated at that time and our ship/shore and shore/shore communications were mostly by Morse code . It was truly a great experience . After 3 years with the Dept of Transport I transferred to Environment Canada’s ice services division . I then spent 5 years as an ice officer on the bridge of 5 individual icebreakers on the east coast of Canada and the high arctic . I then became a project manage on board the DC4 ice reconnaissance aircraft and the Lockheed Electra . Our job was to fly 10 to 11 hour ice/iceberg survey missions , provide scien...Expand for more
tific research projects for oil companies and participate in search and rescue missions when asked by the military . Our winters were spent on the east coast of Canada and during the summer and fall our time was spent in the central and high arctic where our area of operations where from northern Greenland through the high and central arctic along the Alaskan coast to the Bering Sea. My total airborne time during my 33 years was 22,000 hours . I am now retired but I miss the excitement and the opportunities of the past . I was very fortunate to have had the opportunity and the privilege of fulfilling a dream of following in the footsteps of those early arctic explorers . I have written two books on the arctic , one is an autobiography and the other is written for young people between the ages of 6-12 . It’s a story of two young polar bears and a fox who circumnavigate the arctic talking to other animals on how they’re coping with global warming and climate change. For the past 17 years I have been working as a realestate agent for “Coldwell Banker Sarazen Realty” here in Ottawa . .
