Willie's Story

Life I was Born in Marion County, raised in Ellaville. I served in the U. S. Army for 17 years before taken the early retirement option. While in the military I have lived in Germany, Okinawa, Japan, Hawaii, Maryland, Texas, and , Augusta,Ga. I am Married and have been for 19 years, have known my wife since childhood, dated four years before marriage. Since retiring from the military, I work as a government contractor. My assignments has taken me to Japan, Germany, Korea, California, Michigan, Louisiana, Texas, Arkansas, Washington DC, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Missouri, Florida, Utah, Arizona, New Jersey, Georgia, and Colorada. One day I hope to return to my community to teach and be a viable and vital part of that community. Workplace As a Government contractor, I have over twenty-six years experience in telecommunications installation, maintenance, and repair, with over twenty-one years in a supervisory capacity. My experience includes engineering and design, Quality Assurance, work in outside plant, local area network (LAN), wide area network (WAN), wireless internet service, circuit auditing, radio antenna maintenance, Cat5, and fiber optic technologies. I’ve held positions of Field Technician through Senior Engineer. MD; Aero Tek Telecom Services, Atlanta, GA; and Cherokee Contracting, Cornelia, GA Military For over eighteen years I worked as an outside plant installation technician and supervisor. During this time I trained and evaluated Department of Defense personnel (military and civilian) in the installation of outside plant, telephones, switchboards, and associated equipment. I worked as a technical writer and trainer at the U. S. Army Signal School. As a technician and supervisor I was responsible to understand and teach skills related to surveying, interpretation of cable records and drawings, use of test equipment (spectrum analyzers, time domain reflectors, cable fault locators), and installation of antenna and grounding systems in accordance with NEC standards. Jobs that I have worked on include the installation of microwave links for the Far East Network television station in Japan; Maintenance of dial central office line testing and main distribution frame equipment in Germany; Installation of a new European telephone system (reusing 80% of existing in-house cable); Daily maintenance and operations of the main post switchboard in Wuerzburg, Germany. During my eighteen years as a supervisor, I was also responsible to counsel subordinates in all aspects of their career development, advise senior personnel regarding unit capabilities and deficiencies, find workable solutions to personnel and equipment problems, and remain current in all technical aspects of radio, outside plant, and installation procedures.
