Winston's Story
Winston Stone, Ph.D.
University of Texas at Dallas
Clinical Associate Professor of Music and Aesthetic Studies
School of Arts and Humanities
For more than forty years my professional life has been devoted to music, the arts and humanities, and education. As a professional musician and woodwind specialist in the New York metropolitan area, and more recently in the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex, I have had the privilege of performing with numerous accomplished artists in a variety of settings. Some memorable concerts have included the classical talents of violinist Nadja Solerno-Sonnenberg, pianist and conductor Andrew Litton, and Graeme Jenkins and the Dallas Opera. Highlights include performing at the Grand Teton Music Festival, Carnegie Recital Hall, Arundel Castle, England for the Duke of Norfolk, and the Vail Music Festival with President Gerald Ford in attendance. My skills in popular music and jazz have been called upon to perform with Tony Bennett, Ray Charles, Aretha Franklin, Johnny Mathis, and James Taylor, to name a few. As a featured soloist on clarinet and saxophone, I have been asked to perform with the Dallas Symphony Orchestra, the East Texas Symphony, the Richardson Symphony, and at the Mobile Jazz Festival. As an educator my experience is a varied as my music performance career. I have taught music classes at the elementary, secondary, and university level. My interdiscip...Expand for more
linary approach to education has led me from a position of tour guide at the Guggenheim Museum in New York to guest speaker for the Orton Society for Dyslexia. For the past nineteen years, as a founding member of the ¿Dream Collectors,¿ I have added composing and acting to my palmares. This group continues to create programs on a regular basis, the most recent being ¿For Every Action...or the Matter of Choice¿ which is a show that deals with ¿character counts¿ issues and is performed at under-achieving schools in the Dallas ISD. Concurrently, I have led a group of musicians for the Texas Winds Musical Outreach program at numerous adult daycare centers and nursing homes. I draw from all of these experiences to enhance my curriculum at UT Dallas, not only in the music performance ensembles, but especially in the Exploration of the Arts class. Through my professional experience as a musician, actor, composer, and cultural messenger, this practical experience gives insight not easily accomplished by scholarship alone. I continue my quest in the arts and humanities by exploring areas such as emerging media, sound design, and a life-long goal to join the common bonds of all the creative and performing arts.
I moved to Dallas in 1985 when my wife, Deborah Baron, became the piccolo/associate principal flute with the Dallas Symphony. My son, Zachary Stone, 20, is a film/math major at NYU.
