Zeeyon's Story

Greetings to All! I had to update this 'story' as the chapters keep unfolding and writing themselves.... Since I last wrote here, I reported I was still in shock of the time I had remained in the states, excited about going back to school, and doing a great deal of community service. Well, I am still in the states, no longer in shock because I have accepted that this is where I need to be for this time in my life. The Creator has a unique way of making sure that HIS will is done, even if we thought we had a good plan... I submit, as always, doing my best to be a good daughter and a good servant. I will always continue to serve in my community, it's just in me. It is part of my service. So what's going on these days??? Still in school. I am at UTMB doing medical research which involves issues that plague our community directly, such as recidivism rates and the crack cocaine epidemic, and the ethics and morals of medicine (yes, even in my academic studies in medicine, I am still the militant one). So, as you can see, I have my plate pretty full. I am fully enjoying this time as I have already done a great deal of 'exploration' of the world during my youth, so now, it is simple for me to be settled and focused on this path. I am simply ecstatic about life and look forward to each new, different, challenging and exciting day. I am living in Galveston, Texas. Galveston is a little island off of the mainland of Texas on the Gulf of Mexico. It was the key to making me stay in the states and not be bent out of shape! I get a little of both worlds here, so I am satisfied. No grandchildren to report, my only son is determined to do it the old fashioned way (as I did my best to teach him) marriage before children (please, I can not foster baby mama drama), and he is not ready to settle down for marriage just yet, no hurry, no problem. Still enjoying his life as a single man, as well he should. For those of you who were in the band with me, I think of you often. Being in the band at Therrell High brings back some memories out of this world for me. I thought we were the best in the city. I was and still am proud to say that I was a member of that band. We produced some strong musical talent, individuals who went on to great and successful careers in the music industry; Bobby Lovelace, Wayne Lindsay, Toni Joiner, Michael Austin, and others. Mr. Miller even taught my son trumpet. That was really wonderful. As a matter of fact, recall I used to play clarinet. Well, I have been thinking recently that I want to get a sax. I was thinking that it would help me to relax while I am in my studies to just have a mellow horn to blow my troubles away. As long as we have music, life is fantastic! I have a good friend who suggested I not get a soprano sax. He plays bass guitar and said that he saw me with an alto sax. I agreed and that is what I will be getting, really soon. I have a leave from school for my research assignment after February so I will probably look into it then. Outside of school...Expand for more
, that is about it for me, unfortunately in some regard, that is all I have time to do these days. I am blessed that both my parents and my 92 (93 this year) old maternal grandmother are all still alive and well. Outside of basic growing pains and life's challenges that come with growing up, I have had little drama with my son. He has been such a blessing and honor for me. That is a blessing. For me and my personal life, it's a mystery! I have been married 3 times, twice to the same man; the first time to my son's father was an experiment and act of defiance that lasted all of 3 dramatic years! So young, so dumb! I guess we live and we learn...maybe... Love is a stange animal, can't live with it, can't live without it,so we keep on pushing in hopes of a brighter day. Interestingly, I have been contacted through this medium by people I went to elemetary school and academy with. I would love to hear from people I went to college with at Brenau, as well as Texas Southern. There were some folks I really shared great times with while in school and would love to know how you are these days. At Brenau, myself, along with a small group of girls literally changed the map at that school. When we got there, there were no social organizations for Black students and no Black sororities AT ALL! Now, you all know me, (young up and coming Angela Davis, Jr.--afro and all--fist high in the air) I'd just left Therrell High as militant as I could have been for a young girl in those days so I was simply not having that! I marched right into the Dean of Students office and said we needed to have something there for us (a little 'pre-FUBU' demand). She initially told us we could start a social organization, which we did, but that wasn't enough. We all wanted to pledge a sorority (I will not say which one, but they didn't cooperate with us and we were all crushed). We were, after a time, granted permission from the panhellinic society to have a chapter of a Black National Sorority chartered on our campus, we just had to get them to do it. We drove over to UGA to the ONE we all wanted to pledge...They had nothing to do with us! :( We then went to the next one, and they were more than happy to work with us. At the end of the day, I , along with those other girls, chartered the very first chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. at Brenau College, now Brenau University. Today, as Breneau University, they not only have AKA, but every other National Black Sorority on the campus. I wonder if they know the history of how they came to be? Doesn't matter, I just know that the struggle continues and the revolution moves forward, and our work is never done. My work continues. I pray for an abundance of blessings for you all and may each of you be successful in all your endeavors and kept safe along your individual paths. So.....in my life, it's just a continuation of keeping my hoe and planting positive seeds everwhere I go, being thankful for the harvest, and reaping what I sew. All the best... Zeeyon (Robin)
