What is a timeline?

Your timeline is a colorful, convenient way to share memorable moments from your life with people who visit your profile. When you add an entry to your timeline, you can name it, categorize it, tell people why it was memorable, include a photo, and link your entry to a community on Classmates.

You can pinpoint your entry to a specific day, month, or year, or cover a long span of time. You can create entries for any date between 1808 and 2058, so it's easy to share family history or future plans as well as the course of your life so far.

Once you have entries on your timeline, your profile visitors can browse through all the highlights of your life in chronological order. And when you visit someone else's profile, you can take a tour of their timeline, as well.

Reading and writing timeline entries is open to both Gold and free members.

How do I add something to my timeline?

Creating a timeline entry is quick and easy. To do so:

  1. From any page on Classmates.com, click the Profile tab.
  2. Click the Add an Entry button in your Timeline section.
  3. Create your entry however you want, then click Add to Timeline.

Note: The Add to Timeline button won't work until you enter a title and date (at least a year).

By default, new entries are added to the Life category, but you can change that whenever you want.

If you want some ideas for timeline entries, follow step 1 above, then click Get an idea. You'll find a long list of possible entry titles. Click any one of them to start creating an entry with that title (though you can edit it if you want).

Only you can create entries on your own timeline, and you can't create entries on someone else's timeline.

To save time and help get you started, an entry for each of the communities you belong to was added when your timeline was created. You can keep, edit, or delete any of those entries whenever you want.

How do I edit or delete a timeline entry?

It's easy to edit or even delete an entry on your timeline. To do so:

  1. On your profile page, select the timeline entry you want to edit.
  2. When the small entry preview appears, click Edit.
  3. Make the edits you want, then click Save Changes.

To delete the entry entirely, follow steps 1 and 2, then click delete entry. You'll be asked to confirm your decision.

How do I look at someone else's timeline?

Every Classmates member has a timeline on their profile. Each entry appears as a large dot in the main timeline window, and as a small dot in the selection bar underneath the main window. When you visit someone's profile, you'll see the most recent entry selected in the main window, with a small preview opened up. Click View to see the full entry.

You can also click View Entry in the timeline's header to open up the earliest entry on the timeline.

Once you've opened an entry, you can jump immediately to the previous or next entry by using the green arrow buttons on the left and right sides of the entry. (If either arrow is gray, there is no entry to jump to.)

To return to the main timeline view, click View Timeline from any entry.

If you'd like to limit the kind of entries you see, you can click any of the categories listed after Show: Family, Interests, Career, Education, Military, or Life. Once you've selected a category, the arrow buttons on an entry will jump to the previous or next entry in that category. Select All to remove the category filter and see all entries.

What does it mean when I link my entry to a community?

Whenever you add an entry to your timeline, you have the opportunity to relate it to somewhere associated with it—where it happened, for example. Doing so adds a link to that community's page on Classmates.com.

To select a community, use the Select Community drop-down menu. You'll have the option to use a community you already belong to, or to join a new community. Either select the community name you want, or select Join a New One, then click Save & Continue.

If you select an existing community, you can edit your entry or close it. If you join a new community, you'll be quickly guided through the process before you see your completed entry.

If you'd prefer not to relate your entry to a community, click Skip.
