Ethan Green Hawke (born November 6, 1970) is an actor, writer, and director. He graduated from the Hun School of Princeton, in Princeton, NJ, in 1988, where he was named Most Theatrical in his senior yearbook. Hawke started out wanting to be a writer but became interested in acting while in high school. He won his first role at age 14 when he was cast in the 1985 film Explorers. Three years later, a breakthrough role in Dead Poets Society brought him fame and forced him to consider acting as a serious career. Notable films have included Reality Bites, Before Sunrise (and its two sequels), Training Day, Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead, and Boyhood. Hawke has also worked on and off Broadway – both as an actor and a director – and has directed two feature films as well. He has written two novels to date – The Hottest State (1996) and Ash Wednesday (2002) – and also co-wrote the script for Before Midnight (2013).

Awards (partial list):

  • Satellite Award for Best Cast – Motion Picture for Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead. 2007
  • National Society of Film Critics Award for Best Screenplay for Before Midnight. 2013
